The 100th anniversary of the first day on the Somme has me thinking about senseless and bloody attacks. Some come immediately to mind: the first day of the Battle of the Somme Hood's attack at Franklin Cold Harbor Battle of Agincourt |

I don't think Agincourt was senseless; there was a very real strategic purpose behind it. It was just so pathetically mismanaged that it has almost become the definition of "debacle". Now, Cold Harbor… that's an entirely different kettle of fish. There's no excuse for that one. |

Gallipoli Pretty much any WW1 attack was a bloody. 3rd day of Gettysburg |

The battle of the Somme was certainly bloody, but senseless? It was planned for months and supported by a heavier weight of artillery than ever deployed before. |

Can't find the link, but read an article arguing for two 'benefits'/consequences of the battle: Relieved pressure on the French armies reducing the chances of major French army mutinies. Convinced the Germans that they were not going to get a positive solution on land, thus starting the U Boat campaign leading to US entry into the war. |
