The Host has passed their inspections and is now operational again. Phased renovations are to begin in about a month and will be completed over the next 18 months. Per the reservation desk… TRU |

Someone had bumped the old "Host Condemned" thread so I thought it deserved a new thread. It'll take every bit of 18 months and more to try to bring the old lady back from the brink. Hopefully it works out for us. Time will tell. TRU |

I don't go for the Food, and never stay there…. it works for me as a place to game.. |
TRUgamer | 30 Jun 2016 10:36 a.m. PST |
Why yes…. I believe they did. Either that or the new owners are well funded with plenty of street money to bride the local officials. :) TRU |

Wackmole9, I don't believe that they are as corrupt as the officials in Colorado. |

That cesspit of a facility is why I stopped attending cons there. You can wash, wax and polish a but at the end of the day it's still a . |

Let the new owners do their diligence. To pre-judge is just silly. TRU |

I sure hope the new owners do a good job of giving the old lady some more years of life. I am very happy with all of the new neighboring hotels that better meet my travel profile though (so used to traveling for work). We sure like the Lancaster area for the show, so would love to see another decade there if the host receives the necessary upgrades. |

I've been going there since 2002. People complained about everything about the old girl then as they do now. I missed Cold Wars in 2015 and in 2016 attended. I was amazed how decayed the Host really was. The food is still OK. I've never been made sick from eating there. It's certainly better than what you can get at the Fredricksburg Expo center. Here's hoping for a better, revamped place to game in. OBTW, if it is 18 months from now, next Cold Wars should show a great improvement in at least the common areas if the establishment has their priorities straight. There might even be a good many renovated rooms available. |

If they fix it up then I will certainly be there. I never really had much of a problem with The Host but I'd rather have Historicon stay where it is since it's 4 hours closer to me. I'm sure the BOD will do whatever is best for the organization and I'll just have to learn to like it. 8)= |

Damn people, give it a chance. The old Host was pretty rough but this set back coulda been enough to breath some new life into it…New owners, new attitude…you people are unbelievable, can't make anyone happy… |

Look at it this way..it may be a dump..but as Walt O' Hara put it..it's our dump. I do wish the new owners luck, with all the brouhaha over Fredricksburg, the last thing we need is to be finding a new venue for ALL the conventions.. |
nazrat | 01 Jul 2016 2:49 p.m. PST |
"Damn people, give it a chance. The old Host was pretty rough but this set back coulda been enough to breath some new life into it…New owners, new attitude…" I can understand exactly where they are coming from, though. It was already bought once and that owner also promised to invest tons of money and completely re-do the place. They didn't and left it to rot. That can certainly lead to a huger than usual level of gamer skepticism… |
Stepman3 | 02 Jul 2016 6:54 a.m. PST |
Okay, fine. But really what did we do to make any of it better? I'm talking about the slobs that would ruin the bathrooms by pissing on anything other than the toilet or urinal, leaving trash everywhere…Do you do this in your own homes? And it wasn't just the Host that we did this. Every venue we have ever traveled to, we have treated it the same way…Is it an excuse for the Host to let itself go like that? NO it's not. But why do we deserve anything better?… Because we pay to stay there? No…if you paid for something you should treat it with more respect… |
Who asked this joker | 02 Jul 2016 10:03 a.m. PST |
+1 Stepman3. That and to those he refers, wash your damn hands after using the toilet! |
cturnitsa | 02 Jul 2016 10:06 a.m. PST |
I agree with BTCTerrainman (Doug, is that you?)- I love gaming there, I hope it gets some refurbishing, and we can keep at least some (but not all) of the HMGS shows there, for years to come. |
oldnorthstate | 02 Jul 2016 6:36 p.m. PST |
Let's see…phased renovations over 18 months…Fall In is only about 5 months away…what can we expect the condition of the place to be in 5 months? |
capncarp | 02 Jul 2016 6:57 p.m. PST |
Wash our hands? A truly novel concept. Although the resulting downturn in plague and pestilence might take a certain amount of, how do you say, historicality away from some of the games. And we wouldn't want to do that, would we? |
Hafen von Schlockenberg | 02 Jul 2016 8:56 p.m. PST |
And miasma,capn. Don't forget miasma. |
nazrat | 03 Jul 2016 9:54 a.m. PST |
"I'm talking about the slobs that would ruin the bathrooms by pissing on anything other than the toilet or urinal," I agree gamers can sometimes be slobby, but this criticism falls flat. Use a urinal (especially the ones at FCC or The Host) while wearing shorts. No matter how careful you are you WILL feel backsplash hitting your legs. Multiply all that splash by several thousand guys and you have a mess that has NOTHING to do with anybody's aim or anything else. It's bad design pure and simple! |
cturnitsa | 03 Jul 2016 9:30 p.m. PST |
It's bad design pure and simple! nazrat – agreed. Now, for a redesign. Where do you propose the pee should come out? (I couldn't resist) |
nazrat | 04 Jul 2016 7:08 a.m. PST |
Heh. Any suggestion for that would undoubtedly land me in the pokey. 8)= |
capncarp | 04 Jul 2016 8:55 a.m. PST |
Hafen, you've struck the nail on the head! We need more period miasma to set the mood for the convention. Mere unwashed wargamer funk is only unpleasant. We need some _real_ eyebrow-singing, nosehair-curling STENCH to get us in the proper grumpy, unhealthy (-er) condition to have our outlooks as bleak as the folks in the time periods we are playing in. Well, if the Host were redecorated to the level of, say, the Palace at Versailles, we would be right at home. Versailles had no, repeat no indoor places designated to take care of excreting, voiding, etc., etc., etc. Corners and stairwells became the usually-selected targets. And one wonders how far off Mel Brooks' p!$$-boy was from an attempted solution. How's _THAT_ for "historical accuracy"? |
civildisobedience | 04 Jul 2016 9:55 a.m. PST |
Nasrat, So what are you saying? If you're wearing shorts, and you have to use a urinal you should just on the floor? Do you do this everywhere in summer? Also, is there a reason gamers can't get their crap in the toilet bowl too? Also, are there also good reasons half the people at these cons can't take a shower? Or change their clothes one time in four days? It's just ridiculous. I mean the Host has gotten really run down, but it's just catching up to half the gamers who come to these cons. I know this sounds harsh, but how about a call for some basic hygiene on the part of attendees amid all the whining about the venue? |
Foxhole Terrain Company | 04 Jul 2016 1:04 p.m. PST |
Personally I like the venue. The main issue I have is handicap access. It is almost impossible to get around in my wheelchair (when I need it) because of the many steps and the hill to the dealer area. In the past the ramp/door to get to the main area from the dealer area was usually locked. I hope the new owners can remedy some of this. |
capncarp | 04 Jul 2016 5:11 p.m. PST |
Foxhole, Mrs Carp has some similar issues with the Host, but otherwise we found it fairly dealable in general for our purposes. |
vicmagpa1 | 05 Jul 2016 8:28 a.m. PST |
the fact they are vesting money in the old girl says something. i never had a problem there. thought the dinner venue a little high. but the breakfast buffet was always reasonable. i'm willing to give her another chance. hopefully i will get a renovated room. they do need to work on disability pathway to dealer area. |
Moe the Great | 06 Jul 2016 6:42 a.m. PST |
@Civildisobedience I agree. A few years ago a young man walking in from of my through the Distelfink said that there should be a Febreeze spray both that gamers must be forced to walk through before entering any gaming room. I thought it was Genius. |
grtbrt | 06 Jul 2016 7:49 a.m. PST |
Versailles statement Well toilets were installed by the 1770's . and in the meantime there were portable commodes and pots that were emptied by your servants . pretty standard anywhere.. And they were French -not known as the most hygienic of peoples even now . in comparison the white house didn't have toilets until the 1820's |

Hahahahaha… still funny….. <sigh> I am all for giving it the fighting change… for those that have done the research…. there are VERY FEW, if any… venues like this still in existence today that meet all of our needs….. I want this place fixed up!!!! It is perfectly located and the perfect venue…. if fixed up. And yes… I laugh too…. some of these folks have been complaining since 2002… same things, different year. What miserable lives one must lead if you come to complain about a place you do not attend, just to be heard? |
