"Fan-films have always been intended for fans to express their love in Star Trek. But in recent years — with the advent of stronger production, fundraising and distribution tools to average people — some fan-films have gone too far. Because of that, CBS Corp. and Paramount Pictures have released a new set of guidelines for Trek fan-films which one CBS executive says will end what has become an "arms race" in terms of fundraising, attracting big-name talent, and outright commercializing the Star Trek brand. "A lot of the impetus for this is what we had seen happen with fan-films in recent years, and what we felt needed to be done in order to protect fan-films for the long term," John Van Citters, the vice president of product development for CBS, told podcast host Jordan Hoffman early Wednesday. "It seems a little counterintuitive in putting some form of restriction on fan creativity. But it's something that needed to be done in order to cure some abuses that have been out there, and kind of refocuses this around the fan experience and creating more stories."…" More here link Amicalement Armand |

So, I'm guessing they don't like that the fan films are far better written, have better graphics, and better acting in some cases, than their "professional" work. |

Oh, good lord. The fan-films out there are generally excellent and I doubt there are many specific examples CBS could give of abuse (other than the porn versions, of course!). If anything, this is CBS/Paramount realizing that the fans are doing it way better than the studios have in a very long time! The smarter approach would be to require the fan-films to pay CBS/Paramount royalties -- say, 10% of the KS intake plus a percentage of any ad revenue generated by the film. |

link Some fans are very concerned. While some of the fan films are terrible others are just wonderful. The fact that people make and watch these shows that Paramount is not meeting the needs of the fans. Copyright should not last 100 years, I think 10 or 20 should be long enough.
