With such excellent boardgames as Zombiecide, Decent, Touch of Evil, Rivet Wars, Be-Sieged, and many others I cannot think of at the moment, what are your thoughts on how these two forms of entertainment have merged. The Massive Darkness Kickstarter is going great guns and even if you were not interested in the board game the miniatures alone are worth the price of admission (if you are into fantasy that is.) Anyway discuss and pontificate on the topic. Kim |

I dig. There's very few things I like more than a board game full of cool miniature figures. |

Painted minis for Talisman! :) |

Setting up a board game takes a lot less time. It is important when time is at a premium. |

Think Heroquest, Space Crusade? |

Panzer Blitz/Panzer Leader played with GHQ minis goes way back in time. Martian Metals started cranking out the minis specifically for Ogre, Rivet Wars, Fantasy Trip later in the 70s. |

Going the other way, DBA brought the board game concept zone of control to miniature games and I think it was a good idea. |

There's also the alternative such as Heroes of Normandie where there are 15mm scale infantry and vehicles printed on large counters. Beautiful game and could be converted to miniatures easily. |

I like it. You get the entire game in one board with one purchase. I can paint up the figures if I want too. And alot easier to set up. Rivet Wars came out in the 1970s? |

I seem to remember that SPI put out a Napoleonic game years ago that included 15mm figures. |

Ah, just Rivets was the Micro Game, not Rivet Wars. |

I find many rules sets for boardgames work well with miniatures. |

Well, I love using my minis in lieu of boardgame pieces. I just got the "Oh Gnome, You Don't!" board game this past weekend and we hhhaaadddd to play it with Gnome Wars figures. Generally, boardgames have discrete performance spaces and decision spaces and wargames have continuous performance and decision spaces. It's a continuum (and there are other dimensions than those two). I am a big fan of using boardgames or boardgame like mechanics as an overarching campaign structure for wargames. |

I've never liked the fact that even with geomorphic boards, which few games have the terrain is always the same. One of the reasons I prefer miniatures. |

Borg did most of his playtesting on his Command and Colors series using miniatures. I saw games using 25mm for Napoleonics and games of 15mm for Seven years War and I sold him the 15mm American Revolution casting in 15mm. As mentioned it would be easy to covert systems like DBA to miniatures and back to board-games. In fact we produced a conversion set of the DBA style "Distant World Battles" to use with blocks. This has worked great since so few 10mm castings were available for the Alien races. |

Anybody else remember Stalk and North Cape from CinC? Or Barbarian Prince from Heritage? And, of course, the old Milton Bradley American Heritage games back in the '60's (American Civil War aka Battle Cry, Dogfight, Broadsides, and the Pacific war one) had miniatures. Not a new thing. |

Waddington's 'Battle of the Little Big Horn" dates back to the 60s. A board game with 1/38 plastic figures. |

Using miniatures in a boardgame is not key. That has been done over the years, and is only a superficial resemblance. More important question is whether gaming mechanics and rules systems merge, and whether there is more common ground. |

I used to play Panzerblitz with my 6mm armour back in the 1970s. I also used to play 'Tobruk' using WRG 1925-50 as the included rules were such utter sh*te, but I liked the scenarios. I played Imperial Commander using the Squad Leader boards (!) and counters. |

We only ever play C&C Ancients and Napoleonics using miniatures. We have used board games to run campaigns, most recently the 2nd Punic War using Hannibal: Rome Vs Carthage.
Board games with miniatures in one form or another have been going for years. Immediately coming to mind are Shogun, Risk and Axis and Allies. |

On the other side of the fence, I'd say that Square Bashing and PBI are essentially board games. |

Setting up a board game takes a lot less time. Go buy a copy of Mage Knight or Arkham Horror, then get back to me on that in a month after you've set up the board correctly once. :) |

I recently "played" my first and perhaps will be my only game of Arkham Horror. While a wonderful looking game it is not easy to set up, play, understand, much less finish. Now Touch of Evil, that is a great game and I want to get the expansions. |
