I'll be constructing hills for my 6mm battlefield at some point in the relatively near future. How have many of you made your hills? I'm looking to use cheap material with quick construction techniques that give reliable, lasting results. My play surface measures 60cm X 120cm, and the terrain is determined by rolling dice to choose grids on a map; the terrain in the chosen section is then set up on the board. I intend to make the actual hills for each section so that when a section is rolled, I can use those specific hills rather than generic hills that give an approximation. Thanks! |

I make my own hills. I've tinkered with various ways, but ended up using foam core. |

If you are in the UK, have a look at the hills made by S and A Scenics. they are nicely sized for your table size and the 6mm scale, look good and come in a variety of sizes. I know you want to make your own, but unless you already have the materials hanging around, I doubt you will make them much cheaper yourself, plus his stuff is consistent, so you can add to your collection over time. |

I make my own out of expanded polystyrene. Cut to shape, a couple if coats of PVA to stiffen them then flock as desired. Carpet tiles are even easier, just chop them up into hill shapes. Beware rounded hills, figures slide off them. |

Foam works. You can also put the foam, and/or other things underneath your gaming mat, to make hills. |

Polystrene or blue foam mounted on 3mm mdf. The mdf makes it nice and flat and protects the edges. I hope to write an article for my website soon. Cheers Kieran |
