With regard to 54mm figures, do you wargame with them, or do you simply collect them? |

Why is this 'either or'? The original miniature figure games were done with 54mm's from collections, hence… |

I used to collect 54mm playsets by Marx and had a fairly large collection, But I have since gone to 25/28mm figures. I always loved Fort Apache as a kid, but I painted Plains Indians and cavalry, they look much better in color. I loved my 54mm figures, but now I game 25/28. And for the record, I would game with 54mm figures, but all my buildings and terrain are in 25/28mm. |

Neither. Why is this 'either or'? The original miniature figure games were done with 54mm's from collections No, the original miniature figure games were done with 54mm toys (Britains didn't become "collector figures" until they slipped into the "antique" category). Or possibly with 40mm flats, which were also toys. |

Too big to game, 42mm Irregular Minis are the best of both worlds. |

Don't collect figures at all and have only one set of 54mm figures (gladiators) and they are for a small one-on-one game. Don't have anywhere near enough space to either store or play the kind of large battles that I prefer with anything bigger than 10's. |

Game. Ww2 and FIW. I have taken them to conventions to run games as well. I guess I have some collection as well. Some Sudan and Napoleonic. I don't game with these. Not enough of the figures to game with. Matthew |

I would say neither, although I do have quite a few sets of 1/32 Airfix figures that I bought in the 1970s, and I did try to turn SPI's Patrol! into a miniatures game for them by substituting inches for hexes. It worked OK. |

Both! What is the poinn of collecting Britains Deetail figures if I cant game with them. |

Not that I wargame all that much anyway but when I do it's with 28mm or 15mm (or 1/1200 or 1/2000) scale minis. I collect 54mm (nominally, I think they're taller) Britains ACW figures. At around 20 bucks a pop for an infantrymen you would have to be pretty rich to afford to game with them. I also paint 1/35thscale WW2 figures but those are to go with my models. |

Collector though the temptation to game with them again has been strong. After all I gamed with them in childhood, at least in my imagination. |

Game since 4 years back. Each Christmas I now have a tradition: Build as much as I can for a week then set it all up and have friends around for the 54mm carnage. New rules system each year because I'm never completely satisfied. This year is going to be Normandy Firefight rules modified for late Cold War. When I was a kid/teen it was all 1/72 ESCI stuff and rules like Bodycount. I like the size of 54mm and the customisation posibilities. Basically with a file, putty and Dragon or Tamiya kits I can decide what everyone is carrying and in what pose. I know people do this in 1/72 but it I can decide down to more detail – eg where a guy carries his 9mm pistol spare magazine pouch! |
