So I went on a Battlefield in a Box buying spree, buying all the Team Yankee buildings and roads, along with all the railroad tracks and buildings. Have to say I am VERY impressed with what you get for the price. The roads and railroad tracks alone save many hours of creating and painting.

Will have to start picking up some of the other items in this line.

How do the RR tracks look?

Do they lie flat on the table, on their own?

I was looking at RR tracks at the local RR Hobby shop, but the tracks with the plastic ballast tend to bow upwards when snapped together, unless they are nailed down to a RR terrain board.

Needless to say, that was very off putting, sadly.

The tracks lie perfectly flat, they are resin. VERY well painted. They even come with flocking and static grass to use on the sides, but look good enough without it. I had bought HO tracks to use before, but once the reality set in of having to set them in ballast and paint them up my enthusiasm began to wane big time.

The tracks cost $40 USD for 8' worth of 6 straight and 2 curves. The expansion is around $26 USD and adds many smaller pieces. For the price I think it's well worth it seeing them in the flesh.

The RR station and switching tower are also quite nice when added to the tracks, depending on what period/theatre you are doing.

Thanks for the detailed info.

Sounds like something to definitely add to the list, since I agree, getting model RR stuff to work, without tacking it down to the board permanently, looks to be difficult.

Silly question, but how wide is each lane on those roads?

I agree that they do look nice.

I glued my model RR track down to a matching strip of Masonite, hit them with a coat of black spray paint & added ballast. So, rather than hooking them together, I just lay them down end-to-end (just like you would a road or River).

That said, $40 USD for that finished set DOES sound like a good deal.

I tend to agree, the Battlefield in a Box sets are pretty good for their price. I have the road set, they are roughly 2" wide (sad because I am still in search of a road 40mm wide for DBM).

I also have the vineyards set, which works great for my DBM Romans. I will say though, they have some products I would avoid. The old hills and forests they used to produce were rather lacking. The hills were just very rocky molds which looked unrealistic and the forest bases were small and made of hard plastic so they broke easily. They should have done those bases like the ones for the vineyards, a somewhat firm resin/plastic that can bend.

As for their house ranges, they are also very well painted, however my biggest gripe about them is the size, especially on the inside. You will be hard pressed to fit more than 2 stands in most of the houses and being the Soviet player I am this will simply not do.

Their products are really nice, the key is just knowing which ones are worth buying and which ones are worth passing on.

The box says the whole width of the road is 3 inches. So I think each lane is 1.5 inches depending on whether or not you count the white lines.

Cold Warrior28 Jun 2016 5:46 a.m. PST

each lane is 1.25" between the white lines.

maverick,

Good to know about the older sets, will avoid them. For now I just focused on the Team Yankee and railroad sets which will fill out a table nicely. My next purchase will likely be the terraced house and additional Team Yankee wall sets (really like the walls in this set).

Figure basing is a minimal concern since I don't actually play FoW or TY. For now they are being used for Sabre Squadron and eventually WWII once I find a good set of rules for the period (have so many armies, but yet to find a set of rules I like aside from Crossfire). Since I base fire teams on 1"x1" bases internal space should not be an issue.

Haven't looked at the line for hills, tree bases and other like terrain since I usually make my own for those. May eventually grab the cobblestone streets and Russian houses as well.

Will put that on my want list.

Cold Warrior28 Jun 2016 7:30 a.m. PST

FWIW I have been purchasing mine from Miniatures Market, as they have a bonus points promotion on Flames of War items at the moment.

maverick290928 Jun 2016 7:50 a.m. PST

Ah you all are talking about the paved roads. I have the dirt roads! I do not have the paved roads but I have seen them in person and they do look beautiful. I don't have any TY stuff so I don't foresee me needing them for now.

I like their buildings. A few years ago I signed up for the house subscription and bought a few duplicates at the FLGS. Also got some of the larger buildings like the church and train station, so I can put out a nice town.

Don't have any of the Team Yankee buildings, but the factory is very tempting.

The Rice paddies are pretty nice, too. They just didn't come with enough flock to do the job!

The Desert Fort is a bit fragile…

VonTed08 Jul 2016 7:12 p.m. PST

I am a huge fan of their buildings…. good price, good quality. I am not a prolific painter so these buildings are perfect for me.

I do think the roads and tracks are a bit over priced (but I still buy them!)

If you just want the rails, we offer a pre-painted resin range in 15mm
