"After decades of financial and technological strangulation, the Iranian air force—at one time among the most advanced in the world—finally has an opportunity to modernize and potentially become a serious aerial opponent for the United States and other rivals.

The gradual lifting of international sanctions on Iran that began in January—a reward for Tehran agreeing to scrap its nuclear program—means the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force could, in theory, buy new jet fighters to replace its existing, mostly antiquated planes.

Don't hold your breath…"

Imho this is a good analysis on why the Iranian air-force will not be a force to reckon with for a long time…

Perhaps we need to take up a collection, and send them some styrene glue, or the latest Photoshop software version.

Both, will no doubt be very useful for their efforts.

Thanks for the belly laugh, to start out the week!

Boeing is slated to provide them with 100 x bombers, and/or military air transports, if the deal doesn't get nixed by congress.

Of course, the Iranians will claim they will be for "civilian" use, but I can't really see Iran needing 100 x new "civilian airliners" for a country its size.

Yes, we know airliners can be used as strike aircraft/bombers … Remember 9/11.

Re planes, '"Of the 250 (passenger) planes in Iran, 230 have to be replaced,"' – also, 'So far, Boeing has only been granted permission to present its products to IranAir and a handful of other airlines as it tries to catch up with Europe's Airbus (AIR.PA), which won a provisional deal earlier this year for 118 jets worth $27 USD billion.'

So basically the total order is to replace the civilian fleet – frankly, don't see either the Airbus or Boeing 777-9 as reasonable bombers!

Well … they could only be used once in that mode/role …

Iran has an air force?

Modern air forces must be so incredibly expensive to acquire, maintain, and almost as quickly replace, that it's no wonder only a handful of nations can afford them. And most of them are very small.

Well Iran just got a whole bunch of $$$ recently from the US/West. 'Nuff said …

It's their own money…

As the article stated it's low on their priority list.

With interest I understand … So yeah, it's a good idea to give one of the largest supporters of islamic terrorism who chant Death to the US/Israel, etc., back their money.

Maybe we can also send some plutonium. Cause they say the are only going to use nuc tech for peaceful purposes. Call me skeptical when it comes to moslem countries who everyone knows supports terrorism … So sure it's OK …

And I'd add the Saudis to the list of big radical islamic supporters too …. But as we see … "Realpolitik"[and $$$$] rules in many cases.

Ucalegos29 Jun 2016 4:05 a.m. PST

I should hope they get the interest. If I held your money in escrow for years I imagine you'd at least want the interest as well.

They seem to be trying to spend quite a lot of said money with Boeing. What goes around comes around.

I'd expect nothing less … that is the way business international or otherwise works.

That answer works for both your comments. wink

It always comes down to the "Benjamins" … money

Only after they pay reparations for all those Americans they kidnapped and held illegally so many decades ago, not to mention the ones their currently still holding.

Ucalegos29 Jun 2016 11:34 a.m. PST

How is Gitmo these days?

Rod I Robertson29 Jun 2016 11:56 a.m. PST

Well at least Iran is not buying MIG-29's, SU-25's and HIND-24/35's like your ally Iraq from Russia. It's buying airliners to replace 40% of its aging commercial air fleet from US-based Boeing no less. That says something about the Persian desire to move forward and leave enmities of the past behind. Maybe we should consider that move-on too in order to deal with the many more serious problems in the region than an airliner purchase by a theocracy which is growing more and more marginalized by the demographics and cultural gulf within its own citizenry.
Move on, dudes.
Rod Robertson.

That's not going to happen anytime soon … 'nuff said …

Oh haven't you heard ? They're closing the detainee camp. And shipping the remaining terrorists to anyone who will take them. One just disappeared from somewhere in South America. Guess that didn't work as planned. Wonder how much the US paid for them to keep an eye on that guy ?

But so far keeping the Naval Base and Airfield. Even if the Fidel Bros want it all back.

Yes … but so far islamic terrorists/jihadis and fundamentalists islamic nations don't seem to want to be friends …

Now the Raul Castro is happy with the new open relationship with the US. I'm kind of for that … look at all the economic opportunities ! You don't really have that with islamic terrorists, etc. …
