A blog update with my latest and very lucky find on Ebay. Seven 1/600 ACW and ironclad models for less than a fiver each :)

I'm having trouble identifying some of them, in particular these two Union wooden warships

and the manufacturer of this Italian turret battleship (Duilio)

Stupid question, but what material's the Duilio? Wondering if it might actually be a scratch build based on the tutorial in Sea Battles In Miniature…?

Thats what I thought when I saw it in the pictures on Ebay, but its white metal and looks very much like a kit. It is a bit rough though so it may be getting a rebuild and some better looking turrets at some point.

Could it be one of the old Houston ships now sold by Great Endeavors?

I think the two funnel ship in the top picture could be Niagara, a Union frigate.

And I will go out on a limb and suggest the bottom ship in the top photo is Hartford, but from that angle I canīt be sure.

Regardless though, very nice find!

That Italian ironclad is a mystery. How big is it? In 1/600 the Duilo/Dandolo should be somewhat over 7" (18cm). If I remember, the 1/1000 Houson's casting is a bit less than 4.5" (11 cm), but the model in your photo doesn't look anything like the Houston's model anyway. For one thing, the sides are way too clean…

Those turrets are all wrong for the Duilio/Dandolo or even the later Andrea Doria class (a.k.a. Ruggiero di Lauria class). You might ask if you can buy just the turrets from one of the "old" ironclads of similar design in the Old Glory Shipyard range of 1/600 ironclads (e.g. HMS Devastation or HMS Inflexible).

The smaller of those unknown screw/sail ships might be the USS Ossipee. The BAY model looks very similar, though of very slightly different proportions:

Smaller ship looks like a Ossippee or Lackawanna. The larger ship looks like the Niagara, but it seems like it should be larger. The Niagara in 1/600 is very long. I have a scratchbuilt by Larry Enoch and it dwarfs the Hartford. I believe the Bay Niagara is an Enoch hull. They are gorgeous models David. You got a steal.

Really, you got them painted?

CRICKIES!

I have to stop now, lest I devolve into harsh language.

Awesome score, David!
