It wasn't a good sign that they couldn't actually host their own game files on their own website, especially with it already having all their older game files on it. And that they couldn't get extra bandwidth or something from Dropbox to handle the load (I don't use Dropbox so I don't know if that is possible). The rules after a quick glance look pretty much the same. While using the unit leader in the 3D version makes unit cohesion pretty simple the fact that one of the more useless shooting members of the team is the last to die will become annoying when you really wanted to save that Bazooka for one last shot at the enemy walker. Now to wait for the cards to see if there are any real issues. Otherwise I am excited to see something happening with the game again and to hear that the 3rd wave ship for the kickstarter should be on the water by now. |

First few fixes have been identified for instant kill weapons and Damage Resilience. Just as well the PDF came out before the printed book (though do they have time to fix the printed book?) |

So what do you think of the new rules. Under fire and suppression are interesting additions. |

I always played Battlefield (now free-form) so Under Fire and Suppression were always there. In the excitement of play you often forgot to add the token states and surprisingly they were often cleared down to Under Fire when rolling for suppression. I like the suppression rule though (and was one of the people arguing for keeping it when hit, not just when damage is taken). The loss of action can start to make auto-actions hard choices. Do I shoot to suppress/kill the enemy or move into cover somewhere versus just being able to shoot and move. The new office Rally action also really helps make officers in charge of keeping units moving when under fire. The Unit Leader removal in free-form is the only bugbear left in the rules (as I see it). My solution would be that when the unit leader dies the unit gains a Stunned token and nominates a new unit leader. This gives the player a penalty for removing the unit leader to keep a heavy weapon and gives a sniper a good choice of which model to kill. This would work in both grid and free-form without any problem. The Line of Sight issue with the unit leader is maybe too simple for wargamers used to true LOS but this is a pretty fast game and it removes arguments on placement or position of models so should work (though not being able to shoot at a unit of 5 because 1 his hidden out of sight will be strange to explain). I like the new DR. Just a bunch of extra saves. Much easier to explain than the old version. The final rules are out, you can find them on dustgame.com/downloadfile.php . I think they still need some minor errata and FAQ. It would've been better to leave the rules out for a few months getting community feedback before printing but they had to rush through to make sure product is ready for GenCon. That means there'll be errata and FAQ on day one of the release of a book and that always strikes me as a shoddy product release. |
