…incoming chief warns

"The National Guard Bureau's incoming chief warned senators this week about the department's end strength, calling it "high risk" and suggesting that expected cuts in coming years could present significant national security challenges.

Lt. Gen Joseph Lengyel, who currently serves as the National Guard's vice chief, told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday that the 342,000 Army National Guard members and the 105,500 Air National Guard personnel are barely enough to cover potential demand on the force.

At any time, about 4,000 of them are mobilized. Since 2001, guardsmen have mobilized more than 780,000 times in support of the wars overseas, not including other foreign contingency demands.

No problem as far as national defense goes. Foreign "interventions" will suffer with a reduced Guard. But if anyone tried to invade the US they would be facing city by city street by street fighting against the most fully armed citizenry of any country in the world. The Soviets did wargames trying to work around that wormy apple in their conquest strategy options and never found a solution that worked….

I'm more concerned about the state of the active duty force. I've heard that the force is the smallest it has been since just prior to WW2.

Indeed. But remember at one time about 40% of Army forces in A'stan and Iraq were NG or Res …

And as we see with the flooding in VA/W.VA, the NG are mobilized to help out. They have assets that other civilian organizations don't.

As a sidebar, the OH NG already has orders cut to deploy many to Cleveland, OH during the RNC. They also pull that kind of duty as well. Based on all the "things" going on … they probably will be needed.

I would be playing Red Dawn if someone would release western insurgents in 15mm. Stuff like M16s, hunting rifles, and other fun stuff.
