Starting a small 28mm Vietnam Project and would like some 'atmosphere' playing on the DVD Player in the shop while I work.

I have the following:

Apocalypse Now.
The Siege of Firebase Gloria.
Platoon.
Casualties of War.

What films should I add to this list-?

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Full Metal Jacket!!!

Hamburger Hill (almost forgot)

I've also heard that "Go tell the Spartans" is a very good movie, but others here can confirm.

Go Tell the Spartans, definitely! great "early war" movie.

and Good Morning, Vietnam just for the soundtrack.

AP: forgot to list FMJ; I think because in my mind it's really two movies – the first, 'Boot Camp' (outstanding) and the second, 'Vietnam' (which I don't care for).

When I watch it I usually turn it off after Lee Ermey is shot.

'We Were Soldiers.'

You can also get the '80's TV series 'Tour of Duty' pretty cheap.

'84 Charlie MoPic' and 'The Odd Angry Shot'

Grignotage26 Jun 2016 10:12 a.m. PST

The Quiet American, about the French period. There is a french language Dien Bien Phu movie, with great visuals and a good soundtrack, that I believe is free on Youtube.

Go tell the spartans is a good movie.

Grignotage26 Jun 2016 10:15 a.m. PST

Also the documentary The Anderson Platoon is good stuff.

14Bore26 Jun 2016 11:46 a.m. PST

Killing Fields ( but really on Cambodia and after affects of Vietnam )

Martin Rapier26 Jun 2016 11:49 a.m. PST

This is what is so great about TMP: had to make a grocery run at my local Stop & Shop.

Picked up 'Go Tell the Spartans' and 'We Were Soldiers' from the bargain DVD Bin for $2.99 USD each!

There are several already mentioned, and there is a loooong thread on the Fields of Fire forum about this:

I have enjoyed several of the aforementioned (Go Tell the Spartans, Hamburger Hill (probably my fave), Charlie Mopic is a decent one, shot from the perspective of a camera man, Full Metal Jacket).

Come join the forum as we talk all things Vietnam there!

John Wayne in "The Green Berets" of course, all ya young whippersnappers.

nevals26 Jun 2016 2:13 p.m. PST

The Boys in Company C, from 1978 or thereabouts. I saw it twice in 1979 or 80. Wikipedia says it was the first Vietnam movie to come out after the war.

nevals26 Jun 2016 2:17 p.m. PST

Sorry, not the first; among the first ones.

Joe,
I'll second the recommendation for The Odd Angry Shot. It might be the only film about the ANZAC involvement.

Nick: thanks, on the list.

4th of july has not been mentioned odd angry shot good film

artaxerxes27 Jun 2016 2:41 a.m. PST

Dien Bien Phu. Franco-Vietnamese production from 1992. link
Made by Pierre Schoendoerffer who served there and was taken POW. very powerful, but so far as I know does not have an English sub-titled version. But fantastic film.

Blutarski27 Jun 2016 7:00 a.m. PST

"Hamburger Hill": IMO, a great war film – one that concentrates on honoring the soldiers (of both sides in a strange way) and their sacrifices and leaves aside the sub-textual political posturing that colors so many other films of the VN era.

My opinion, FWIW.

Cripes! I forgot "We we Soldiers once…"

Since it was in the Highlands and one of the first big engagements, there is a very WW2 feel to it (sans choppers, of course) and also honored both sides.

doug redshirt27 Jun 2016 10:31 a.m. PST

Only one you Need to understand the whole bloody war is Go tell the Spartans.

Joes Shop Supporting Member of TMP27 Jun 2016 11:56 a.m. PST

Watched 'Go Tell The Spartans' last night: excellent!

USAFpilot27 Jun 2016 12:38 p.m. PST

Platoon Leader. I read the book in college. True story written by Army Lieutenant who served as a platoon leader in Vietnam. Not a big Hollywood production type movie, which is good in my opinion, just a simple thoughtful plot.

Hamburger Hill. Another simple movie about soldiers trying to take a hill. Great quote shown on screen at end of movie written by an Army Major; very moving. Soundtrack is by modern composer Philip Glass.
