Dresden reminds me an awful lot of Sharpe. The books are entirely formulaic. Starting out, Dresden is usually attacked by some monster or other. Then an old enemy comes to him offering a job, or demanding he do one. He recruits old allies. Then he is attacked. Friends die or are captured. He is nearly slain. SUMMONING THE VERY LAST FIBER OF HIS MAGICAL ABILITY HE LAUNCHES A DESPERATE ATTACK THAT BARELY MISSES KILLING HIMSELF and defeats the Enemy. For now. Then he counts his losses and stoically awaits the cliffhanger. All that said, he still writes faster than GRR Martin, and the series barrels along. It may even reach a conclusion! I think I may be 2 or 3 behind. |

You forgot to add the ever escalation of "bad guys" in power and consequences from one book to the next. Afer awhile it does get predictable. |

It's very "Lester Dent" but works for what it is. |

I happen to like "formulaic", btw. I've read all the Sharpe books. The last one of the Dresden books that I read, he spent the entire book dead. I won't give any Spoilers by saying if he got better. |
