Oh, I thought it might be a German version of the Cuyahoga River fire of 1969.
Interesting event, anyway.

The history behind the modern fireworks display is the expansion of France under King Louis XIV, who invaded the Rhineland region in 1689 in an attempt to secure the Palatinate for his sister-in-law Elizabeth Charlotte of Bavaria. French troops burned towns and castles along the Rhine, although to no gain for King Louis in the war.

This mass destruction ultimately leading to the fireworks displays held in the region since 1756. I have seen the display myself, and the fireworks and flares are especially dramatic in the gorge of the Rhine, where each explosion echoes notably. All of the electric lights in the towns are turned off, and floating flares are released upstream to float by the riverboat spectators during the event.

For the history, look at the War of the League of Augsburg, and the War of the Grand Alliance 1688-1697.
