I have been gradually been building up a 15mm early 16th C, French army for FoG-R and was stalled for some time over what figures to use for aventuriers / crossbowmen. There were few figures available that looked the right period and I wanted to get some variety in figures and poses. I had been following Stuart's inspiring blog stuartsworkbench.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/french-missile-foot-ii.html of building a 28mm french army of the same period and eventually, after making smaller and simpler modifications to other figures, I decided to follow his example and modify a selection of different figures from Altuos, Venexia, Old Glory, Black Hat and Naismith /Roundway to try to achieve a reasonably uniform, early 16th C French look. I think one of the key things to make a mix of different figures work together is to have the weapons fairly well matched. Unfortunately the crossbows supplied or cast on the figures were very different is length, bulk and designs I decided to cut and file them to a fairly common length and heft and make new bows from flattened and shaped pieces of brass rod, strung with thin brass wire from a wine bottle.
