Captain Blood set the standard. Great dialogue too. Here's one of my favorites:

Dr. Peter Blood: Have we an English battle flag on board, Hagthorpe?

Henry Hagthorpe: We have every manner of battle flag on board, including a lady's purple petticoat.

Dr. Peter Blood: No, wait. I've a better idea. When an English lion creeps up on a nest of French foxes he does well to wear a bushy tail. Hoist the French flag, Hagthorpe.

Henry Hagthorpe: Aye, sir.

I have the Flynn box set and love it,but have to +1 Crimson Pirate, the epitome of "tongue firmly implanted in cheek". Burt and pal Nick Cravat doing all those stunts are amazing. And I'm not so sure the big "goof-up" was an accident.

Great double feature with his Flame and the Arrow!

Another vote for Nate and Hayes, it doesn't get the respect it deserves.

Not a movie but the "Black Sails" series on Starz is very good too.

At the extreme risk of being non "artsie" and lame I love all of the pirates of the Caribbean, I know that's not vogue, but oh well. I also liked Geena Davis in cutthroat Island. That being said I also like the Patriot, braveheart, all the Batmans, and many others. I also like anything with Errol Flynn in it no matter how lame they are -- GREAT STUFF !!!
Perhaps I may be the last human on earth that sees a movie fully for simple entertainment?

Second Nate and Hayes.

Captain Blood, despite Basil Rathbone's horrible French accent.

The version of Treasure Island with Robert Newton as Long John Silver was the first pirate movie I ever saw and is still one of my favorites.

Cutthroat Island. Because Geena Davis.

Number one for me is the Turner version of "Treasure Island" with Charlton Heston as Long John Silver, but I also like the 1950 Walt Disney version with Robert Newton. I think third place is pretty much a tie between "Captain Blood" and "Black Swan" with Tyrone Power and Maureen O'Hara. Basically I like nearly all the pirate movies made before 1970, but there is one notable exception. "Captain Kidd" with Randolph Scott and Charles Laughton was a real stinker!I have seen the "Black Sails" cable TV miniseries and like the gritty plot, but in many technical respects it really throbs in spite of the big budget.

Russ, you are hardly the only one! It's just that there is a small and highly vocal group here on TMP who just "don't get it" and think movies are supposed to be history. Some of us do just like the entertainment – that's why I, too, enjoyed Cutthroat Island. How about the Yule Brenner version of Jean Lafitte – you get piracy and Napoleonics in one movie? Though the costumes were over the top, blame the whole technicolor phenomena for that. Lots of great old movies – just wish we could eliminate some of the treacle laced music!

I think I'd put Seahawk a rung above Captain Blood.

I've got a soft spot for the Hammer films swashbucklers: 'Devil Ship Pirates' and 'Pirates of Blood River'.
But my all-time favourite is 'Captain Blood'.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first PotC – the sequels are too depressing to think about.
Especially loathe 'On Stranger Tides', because I've loved that book for years, and having it fed through the PotC pap-churner means there's no chance of ever seeing Jack 'Shandy' Chandagnac's adventures as written.

Despite its nominally Jacobite-rebellion theme, "The Master of Ballantrae" spends about half it's running time being piratey. Not Flynn's best, but worth a look.

Norman D Landings25 Jun 2016 6:48 a.m. PST

Dammit, I nearly forgot: "The Light at the End of the World".

Kirk Douglas vs. Yul Brynner!

EMW, My favorite scene in John Lafitte is when the last Highlander piper go's down as his bag pipe is sickly squealing -- great fun !!! To this day when I am illustrating some form of terrible defeat during a conversation I try to mimic that sound --- " eeeeeweeeewwwwe -eee-ee-e" it's great joy to me that everyone stares and just doesn't have a clue ???

Just for the record, a couple postings refer to a movie as "Jean (or John) Lafitte." The correct title is actually "The Buccaneer." The 1958 movie with Yul Brynner as Jean Lafitte and Charlton Heston as Andrew Jackson is a remake of a 1938 B&W version which starred Fredric March. In spite of all the technical errors, I do like the 1958 version for its vivid story and strong acting; also (not least) for the delectable Inger Stevens as Lafitte's romantic interest.
