I think all involved handled the delicate situation very well.

A couple of years ago I attended a talk by the guy who did the research and film about the flag raising. He gave a very compelling presentation and evidence. It was at the Marine Memorial Assn hotel in SF. It was held on the 70th anniversary of the flag raising. In attendance were about 20 Marine vets that were in the battle. There was one Marine that saw both flag raising.

The speaker said he didn't get much cooperation from the Marines in the beginning but evidently they are now starting to acknowledge and cooperate.

I think it's kind of a thorny issue. During the battle the people back home needed a boost in morale and the flag raising helped sell the war bonds. The picture was distributed before all of the facts came out.

Glad to see the right guy gets credit.

I was very impressed with the research skills, or perhaps detective skills would be more appropriate, that were required to identify the participants.
