Guys, I'm filling in a quiz sheet I bought from the local branch of the Royal British Legion, and I'm stuck on a question. It's a quiz based on WW1 (not my strong point) and the answer is either true of false: "There was a German artist who went to war to just live the war himself. He just wanted to experience it first hand. True/False I've searched the internet from one end to the other, but can't find any reference to this (false?), but then again it's like something that could have happened in 1914 (True?). Thanks guys! |

Since there is no way in the world the answer could be false (How could they state that out of millions of men, not one was an artist who went to war just to live the war himself) I would confidently answer 'true' even though you don't know whom they are referencing in the question. Unless this thread is a joke which is too subtle for me. |

Well, it could be a reference to Adolf Hitler. |
Winston Smith | 21 Jun 2016 9:21 a.m. PST |
He was an Austrian artist. So the answer is FALSE. |

No chicklewis it isn't a joke thread, and obviously if it's true it going to be a famous occurrence, not unlike the Christmas 1914 truce. Yes LaserGrenadier and Winston Smith, I thought it might be Hitler. But then I reread the question and realised he actually joined up through a feeling of patriotism, not just to "live the life. And as Winston says, Hitler was an Austrian. Hmm… |

Though he initially went out of patriotic duty rather than curiosity. |

True, but he also wanted to see it himself according to a 1963 interview…. |

> He was an Austrian artist. So the answer is FALSE. That is assuming those who made up the quiz realized the distinction. |

My guess as well is that it is some type of AH reference. |
