Just placed an order for Bachmann WWI medical staff:

Are the style of the nurses appropriate for ACW? Unusable? I plan to repaint them, but not sure of color, guessing grey, crosses I guess need to be painted over.

They weren't really 'uniformed' often as the WWI models as pictured, if at all. In the field much less though. You'd see women in big hospitals and not travelling. Women in the field were mostly part of Christian organizations so clothed as they pleased. Also, in the field they would probably have hair nets not those hats.

So they could be used in the distance at least, that's good. The hobby really lacks women as nurses or volunteers, would like to see an all female kit now.

In the recent, very good PBS series "Mercy Street" the female nurses wore conservative, dark civilian clothes with white aprons. This seems to have been he "uniform" for the ACW, North and South.

So black dresses it is, white aprons, apparantly they often wore bonets, but the one in the Bachmann set with the religious hat, shouldn't it be apropriate for a Sister of Charity like the photo on this site: cwnurses.tripod.com/how.html

So I have received my Bachmann figures, one of the nurses has the red cross on the chest. The American red cross didn't exist during the ACW, but was the symbol used anyway? Or as I assume, only used as a symbol for the VI corps?

Not according to the sources I'm aware of.

Mercy street is pretty good. Looks like in that show the nurses just wore civilian clothes. Don't remember seeing black dresses. Look at some photos from the war. I think you might find there wasn't anything standardized. I don't remember nursing uniforms in the Crimea ether. The American Red Cross was founded in 1888. During the ACW I don't think there were any female nurses actually in the Army.

I hate to tell you but those nurses uniforms are specific to Britain in WWI. I don't think there is anything like that in the ACW. Look at these:

The images in this cwnurses.tripod.com/how.html include photos of women wearing the same style of bonets/scarfes as the nurse to the right among the Bachmann figures. The sister of charity on that site has almost exactly the same style of headwear as the other, so I don't really see they're completely different. Of course some alterations is necessary. Either way there are some women in the Imex pilgrim set that will work.
