All, I generally do a single coat of matte or satin varnish on my figures and those I do for commission. However, now that I have completed my Toy Town armies and begun playing with them, I feel like I'd like a second coat on them. Is that too much? I don't want the finish to become cloudy. |

I do a gloss coat, and when fully cured I do a matte coat. If anything is supposed to be glossy after that (windscreens, bayonets, etc) I use brush on gloss Mike |

And once again. I found two coats of matte really obscured details around faces, so I go gloss and then matte. That definitely seals them. |

I should have added, I use brush on varnish, Modge Podge matte or satin. |

Two. One Gloss (Ronseal Hardcoat) and One Matt (Galleria Matt Varnish). Tony |

One or two coats of Glosscote as a base. Always 2 for figures that get physically laid prone during games (Blood Bowl, dungeon crawlers, etc). Then a topcoat of DullCote if the figure is not being left shiny. |

Same as many others, gloss then matt. |

The best method as others have states is a coat of gloss then a coat of matt varnish. I sometimes just do straight up matt varnish but have often seen over time that the paint on the figures will not hold up to heavy wear. The Gloss really gives the paint a hard shell protection and the Matt just brings everything back to a natural tone. |

I do a light gloss coat. Washes and weathering are applied (the gloss coat provides a slick substrate). A final flat coat is applied. All applied by airbrush. I use Vallejo Flat/Gloss cut 50/50 with Vallejo Airbrush Thinner. |

I only do one myself but I think the idea of gloss on matte for Toy Town figs sounds worth trying out |

I'm another "gloss, then matt" fan. On the rare occasion I want a gloss finish, I usually do two coats, although I suspect one is enough. I don't think I'd ever "matt then gloss" though. |

I only re- varnish with a thinned down varnish so as not to cloud the details, but only if there is a patch I missed or which dried shiny! |

Figures get a coat of gloss – Hanford car spray can – then a coat of army painter matt after an ink wash. Vehicles or aircraft with decals get gloss before and after the decals, then the matt. All done with rattle cans and never had any problems with loss of detail etc. |

Two coats semi-gloss then zap them with Dullcote the next day. Grelber |

To clarify, I noticed issues with two coats of matte with brush-on. Rattle can coats are much lighter and not prone to this. |

My routine is one spray coat of gloss, to protect the paint, then *two* spray coats of flat. 'Cause one coat of flat doesn't entirely kill the shine, but two coats kills it dead. |

I use two coats of gloss for my 54mm Mike |

I usually do 2 or 3 coats of dullcote. Then every few years after an outing I hit them with dullcote again. I've been doing this for 20 years and never have any chips or wear. Then again I do buy dullcote by the case. |
CeruLucifus | 19 Jun 2016 2:46 p.m. PST |
Gloss 1-2 coats then matte topcoat, then spot brush gloss on anything that should be glossy. |

I double all of my troops. But more as a precaution that I missed a area. And Dulcote is my favorite. |

I did a second coat of Modge Podge Satin, and they look great. |

If your paint isn't holding up the heavy wear, then look to getting a better primer rather than a better varnish. |
zippyfusenet | 19 Jun 2016 7:38 p.m. PST |
Actually Nick, I buy a lot of figures already painted, some pro-painted, others second-hand. I can't control or even know, in most cases, what they're primed with. But I sure can hose them down with spray laquer. |
