"In the early 1950s, the Canadian government began to solicit orders for a new high-speed interceptor. The explosion in jet technology had rendered Canada's first- and second-generation interceptors obsolete. In order to patrol Canada's vast airspace, the Royal Canadian Air Force would need something awesome. Avro Canada answered the call with the CF-105 Avro Arrow, a high-performance interceptor on the cutting edge of existing aviation technology. A big, beautiful fighter, the Arrow offered a promise to patrol Canadian airspace for decades, while throwing a lifeline to Canada's military aviation industry…" Full text here link Amicalement Armand |

Despite the CBC film, the Arrow was a failure. The engines never developed the promised power, the electronics were obsolete when designed, and the beast was too heavy to operate from all but a few RCAF bases, which were needed for bomber and maritime patrol units. The only reason the project proceeded beyond the drawing board was the faulty idea that it would save the abysmally run Avro Canada with foreign orders. Just who the Government thought those orders would come from was never revealed, but since the Arrow would have been in competition with the less expensive and more capable F-102 Delta Dart, the whole idea was a politicians' pipedream. |

Beautiful airplane. Kinda reminds me of the A5 Vigilante (and F108 Rapier). |

@rmaker- no way man! The Arrow was multiple generations ahead of it's time, it would have beaten any plane of the time and any plane designed since, and Canada would have had the most powerful plane IN THE WORLD if it hadn't been for those meddling Americans!!!! At least, that's what all the Arrow fanboys keep telling me. ;) -Will |
