Does your sci-fi terrain look like standard grass and trees, or does it have sci-fi elements too?

Lion in the Stars18 Jun 2016 1:30 p.m. PST

My buildings have scifi elements like holographic signs, but I still use standard grass and trees, too.

Other than the Lava Field cloth I made and a Lego modular base, every thing I use is from my normal collection.

My sci fi terrain is definitely out of this world:

Very ! Here's just a few of mine. link That being said, I use everything from Ancient to Ultra Modern, etc., … As it's a very Big Galaxy and there would many many different types of terrain. As opposed to GW who thinks Gothic structures and ruins are the only terrain available ! huh?

Here's a few more …

Some alien, mainly modernish (like Aliens)

Mark Plant18 Jun 2016 4:54 p.m. PST

How sci-fi your terrain is should depend on how alien your aliens are.

In GW's defence, their worlds are largely humanoid, so live in shapes suitable for humanoids.

To be honest, my "Sci-Fi"terrain isn't all that Sci-Fi. It's generally more a mix of stylized industrial, slightly near future urban and dystopian cyberpunk.

Much of it could be used in modern settings with no issues.

About 1/3 of it is a bit more futuristic, like this cyberpunk'ish building.

A lot is generic but I do have half a dozen or so buildings that are very definately sci-fi

Mine could be more Sci Fi. But then it depends on where it occurs.

Have lots of SF buildings in 6mm from Angel Barracks, Brigade, and Sainer. The tough part is flora and fauna that don't look like good ole planet earth. Over the years I have collected some stuff I use for this but I still don't feel like I have an alien landscape.

Very sci-fi. Pink foam painted light orange, matches the old pink/orange blanket used for a ground cloth. Very Tattoiney.

I don't use historical Earth buildings. I build my own, based on various kinds of boxes (salad, food carry-out, etc.).

For plants, I use aquarium plants and plants used in flower arranging, like leaves of various colors on wires. It never looks like any Terran forest or jungle I've ever seen in person or in media.

That being said, there is a lot of green in it, because most worlds worth fighting for are habitable, and will have green plants to give off oxygen.

I have a few plastic origami plants in square planters. I use those for landscaping around buidlings. They look vaguely earthlike.

My ground cloths are usually green, tan, or brown, Earthlike based on the assumption above. I haven't decided what I'll do for a desert scenario. I think the range of color choices is pretty broad after what I've seen in deserts and arid areas of the American west.

For pavement, I use gray because it's easy for players to identify it as pavement, and sometimes black and gray for a space port landing pad. I suppose that it could be any color, depending on what is available on a particular planet.

I'm still developing my own terrain but I do aim to make it look like it's not anywhere on Earth, withing sensible parameters. So nothing totally weird (like floating rocks) but definitely alien. Cityscapes will probably look more recognizably build by humans, mostly because the majority of my miniatures are human (or posthuman in some cases), but even then any ruins present (if there indeed will be any) won't look like Stalingrad with moahr skullz.

SciFi has a broad range. My scifi terrain runs the range from Earth duplicate (from a couple of different centuries) to completely alien.

The mostly-flat grassy field planet with occasional pines is VERY sci-fi, I'll have you know.

Mako1119 Jun 2016 11:02 a.m. PST

Not very thus far.

Need to work on coming up with more a more alien look.

"It's a class-M planet, with atmosphere, climate, and terrain similar to Southern California."

Borathan19 Jun 2016 11:50 a.m. PST

A lot of my terrain tends to vary by what I want with it.

I have one set that is pretty much a 1950's style city that's more for a campaign that's been continuing for some time now locally that's basically an X-Com type thing, though with more fantastic elements mixed into it thanks to one friend who loved the idea of vampires clashing with the aliens (That originated from a book, can't remember which right now). Lots of old pasticville there…

I've also got a lot of more industrial stuff.

For more vegetation and such, however, I tend to be more on the earthlike and most of it is stuff that I don't need to worry if it's to fantasy or scifi since I play a lot of games and like being able to insert it into fantasy, scifi, and historicals…or anything else really barring scale, and even that can be less of an issue depending upon what it is.

Mix of scifi doodads and modern styles

stroezie21 Jun 2016 12:14 p.m. PST

I play mostly scifi anyway so my terrain is all either human scifi or alien planet.
