I want opponents for my Magyars and East Franks so I've decided to go with Lombards. From what I've read, Lombards by this time would have a more generic early Medieval look, so more like Essex's dark age range rather than Baueda's more barbarian look correct? What would you use for 10th century Italian Lombards? |

You have a number of options here. Lombard would certainly of had commercial contact with the southern kingdoms of the East Frankish Empire including the sending mercenaries to fight in the Emperor's wars. Copying the East Frankish they may be wearing knee-length chainmail, helmet and round shield; the tear-drop shield coming into use at the end of the 10th century. Having said that, there is a possibility of an eastern influence either from Byzantium or the Saracen until they were thrown out of mainland Italy. I would recommend Timothy Reuter's Germany in the Early Middle Ages 800 – 1056 as he covers the interaction between the Empire and Italy rather well. Cheers, |

Good suggestions. Wargames figures for ancient and medieval periods often focus on 'tribe' or region rather than current fashions among the warrior classes. So figures sold as Lombards reflect a C5th-7th Germanic look akin to Goths with big beards and long lances, whereas C10th Lombard warriors surely reflected styles akin to the mainstream of European armour development, probably with influences from their Byzantine neighbours. |

That would be a bit like getting a Royalist army from 1642 for your WWII needs. |

Who knows? Maybe Rupert would have kicked arse at El Alamein. And the Lombards in the links above look pretty generic Dark Ages to me. |

You should use the Ottonian Frank figures from Essex! |

Yes, They list in different mixes these days, but the main useful figures are in the DGS range I would also add in NA5 NA2 NA7 SXA6 All of these will fit in as Late Lombards with either concal or rounded helmets, thigh length mail shirts and round shields. |
