I needed to put some pegs in the feet of some Vikings that came with no bases, used my trusty pin vice. Last figure, slipped at the first twist, Damn thing went straight through and poked out of the skin on the other side. Anyone done anything equally daft (and painful)

ouch!

Ack..puncture wounds are hard to heal. Better get that looked at.

Winston Smith15 Jun 2016 12:14 p.m. PST

I've done that with a mini chisel bit.
It's a bit disconcerting to see a bit poking out on the other side of your finger.

I was cleaning flash off some metal figures with an Exacto knife that was perhaps not as sharp as it should have been. The blade slipped and cut a nice thick slice of my finger. Still attached at one end, but bleeding good.

Washed it out, patted the blood I could away, and reached for the bottle of super glue on my modeling table. Took care of it right quick. Still a fine scar on that finger though.

It's a normal hazard for most of us!
Lots of cuts, spears imbedding but no drill holes.

Not that deep but many times ran drill bits into my finger or hands.

A couple of times

Cleaned them well and watched for infection – healed just fine

Hurt like a sum'bee, though

About 10 years ago was cleaning figures with an exacto knife, knife fell and I instinctively closed my legs to catch it, it went right into my lower thigh. Bled like hell, got a Tetanus booster (was due for one anyway), and left a nice scar.

Always make sure you are up to date on your Tetanus shot. Our hobby has all kinds of little hidden perils.

A few years ago, I had a Stanley knife (Exacto to the US) blade cut a nerve in my left index finger, while cleaning flash off a Wars of the Roses foot knight.
I got the feeling almost completely back 18 months later as the nerve healed.

I do plastic, mostly, now!

Now that event seems worthy of a posted picture! It is very important to document our follies for future reference. At least you have a scar to point out to fellow modelers.

My wife is a nurse…so I have to puncture a major artery, or loose consciousness to get any sympathy. I did step down on the blade of a box cutter I left in my shorts pocket once while changing into my jammies.

Do it all too frequently! I have really large hands with a heavy callus layer; recently I was using a .081 twist drill to make starter holes for grab irons in a model.

I knocked my X-Acto off the bench, grabbed one side and picked it up. Now, I'm looking for the twist drill that I was just using. It's gone, can't find it.

Ten minutes later after getting another twist drill I left the shop for a coffee break. Pouring the coffee I noticed the twist drill sticking right through the bottom ridge of my left hand!

Good fun drilling through fingernails (to drain subungual haematomas) in Accident and Emergency.
Got to be ready to step aside smartly though, because those things can squirt!

Worst hobby-related self-inflicted injury I've had was leaning on a work table – on which was a hot soldering iron. My entire palm came up like a balloon full of serous fluid.

Worst hobby-related injury to a third party I've seen was a colleague who builds and flies R/C helicopters.
He has an engine and rotor unit in a vice -starts it up – it shakes free, falls, and he instinctively reaches out to catch it.
Spends the afternoon in his own operating theatre, while the surgical team he usually leads reattach three severed fingers.

Just Exacto cuts here and there over the years. Nothing serious.

Yup. Superglue is your friend when it comes to "battlefield" injuries.

Yes – was poking a heated piece of wire into a 1/72nd plastic mini (back in the early 80s) and slipped and rammed it through my finger similar to what you did except it went through the second knuckle on my left hand middle finger. Didn't actually hurt – until I pulled it out. Barely a drop of blood – probably because the wire was heated.

Cleaning flashing with the figure in my left hand, razor knife in the right. Something slipped and the blade cut deep along the length of the finger nail on my left middle finger.

It has been 6 years… and still the nail and flesh cannot decide which should be on top.

Yeah. I hate when that happens.

Been there, done that, many times.

It is a running joke at our house, that whenever I change blades or drill bits, the kids run to the bathroom to replenish the always handy supply of bandages I keep near the work station. Kids always tease the wife about our injuries, because she thinks everyone needs stitches for every scratch.

Heal quickly.

kallman15 Jun 2016 5:02 p.m. PST

My fingers are mostly scar tissue.

nazrat15 Jun 2016 7:24 p.m. PST

I was using my dremel to drill out a figure's foot for a pin and I looked away for a split second-- the spinning bit jumped out of the hole and went all the way down into the center of my middle finger. Man, that was painful for WEEKS!

I have to get my fingerprints retaken every couple of years. It makes the match better.

I stepped on a brad last night because some people can't clean up after themselves …

Cerdic16 Jun 2016 8:59 a.m. PST

Luckily I've never managed to injure myself doing any wargame related activities.

I have had a shard of beer glass go right through me hand, though…..

Mako1117 Jun 2016 11:50 a.m. PST

Yep, sitting indian-style on the floor, cutting off parts from a plastic kit sprue, so using the big-handled, wide, chisel-blade.

What could possibly go wrong?

A teenager at the time, so couldn't see that the substantial pressure on the wide knife handle I was using might cut through suddenly, which of course it did, plunging the blade fairly deep into my thigh, and eliciting a rather sudden gasp from me over that.

Didn't really hurt, since the blade was sharp, but there was blood everywhere, and only the wider handle stopped the blade from plunging deeper, I suspect, which was lucky.

Adventurous trip to the E.R. with dad, late at night, to get a tetanus shot and stitches.

On the plus side, there was a magazine on a reading table there, so I got to read an in depth article about the little A-37 Dragonfly.

Now, I cut things on a hard surface, instead of trying to do that in mid-air over my body parts.
