Which is your favorite?

SBD Dauntless

Stuka

Not a favourite but it was very effective in its designed role.

Winston Smith15 Jun 2016 12:18 p.m. PST

Dauntless

Blackburn Skua – was also featured in one of my favorite 'Commando' magazines.
PE-2, though not a dedicated dive bomber, would rank too.

boy wundyr x15 Jun 2016 12:46 p.m. PST

The Swordfish was an occasional dive bomber, and the Swordfish is my personal avatar of an airplane (out-of-date before it started but outlasted everything built to replace it), so I'm going with that.

SBD Dauntless.

Hafen von Schlockenberg15 Jun 2016 1:08 p.m. PST

Another vote for Dauntless. My first ever plastic kit was the old Hawk model,a Christmas present at age 10.

The plane could take a lot of punishment(the model did, too!).

Stuka

Another vote for the SBD Dauntless

Sank more enemy shipping then any other allied aircraft.

SBD Dauntless, one more vote.

Stuka, the best of the WW2 dive bombers due to its actual vertical dive. Second the Dauntless. Skyraider, is very good it used all the lessons learned during the war. Honorable mention, the Ju88.

My favorite – just because it is so improbable is the He177. A four engine dive bomber ….. just too silly of an idea.

Disco Joe15 Jun 2016 2:09 p.m. PST

Stuka.

A classic…..

Vultee Vengeance the 14th Armies flying artillery.

Damn forced to agree with Dom again, this is getting to be a habit.

+1 on the Dauntless, but I have a soft spot for pretty well all American carrier planes of WW2.

Heart said it best: Barracuda.

Stuka. I think I built five different Stuka kits when I was a kid.

skippy000115 Jun 2016 3:49 p.m. PST

SBD Dauntless but I would like to see it with the Stuka's 37mm long AT cannon.

Barracuda?
Seriously???
It can be assumed that he means, "your favourite dive-bomber that could recover from a dive".

Make it a third for the Vultee Vengeance.
Unloved, unrecognized and unsung, but did a heck of a job.

As bad as the Barracuda is, I am really waiting for someone to bring up the Buccaneer, hee hee hee,,,.

SB2C-3 and -4 Helldiver, the models in which the ridiculous catalog of design flaws and shoddy construction was largely eliminated.

SBD Dauntless but as I like the obscure, also the Vultee!

Cyrus the Great15 Jun 2016 5:30 p.m. PST

Stuka.

mjkerner15 Jun 2016 5:34 p.m. PST

Dauntless. But the Val gets a lot of my love. Beautiful wings, beautiful plane.

zippyfusenet15 Jun 2016 5:37 p.m. PST

Mitsubishi Zero. Did more damage to the US Navy than any other.

Sure, the bomb often wouldn't release, but then there was no need to recover from the dive.

Dauntless followed closely by the Stuka

jdginaz15 Jun 2016 10:30 p.m. PST

Yet another vote for the SBD Dauntless

MHoxie16 Jun 2016 1:35 a.m. PST

B7A2, dual torpedo/dive bomber.

Texas Jack16 Jun 2016 2:09 a.m. PST

I suppose Dauntless would be the winner, but I have a soft spot of the Vindicator, especially when I watch the film Dive Bomber.

Kelly Armstrong16 Jun 2016 4:40 a.m. PST

Dauntless, those clean lines and menacing up tilt to the wings imply a brooding efficiency and true grit.

PVT64116 Jun 2016 5:43 a.m. PST

So little love for the D3A. I believe that the Val sank more allied shipping than any other Axis dive bomber.

Norman D Landings16 Jun 2016 5:50 a.m. PST

Barracuda?!

"Weighs six tons,
No front guns,
****-all to rely on,
Oh you know what you can do,
with yer Barracuda II,
Old Iron, Old Iron!"

genew4916 Jun 2016 8:36 a.m. PST

Dauntless for me

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP16 Jun 2016 8:39 a.m. PST

I think the Dauntless was a better dive bomber but my vote goes to the Ju-87 Stuka for sentimental reasons

HMSResolution16 Jun 2016 9:40 a.m. PST

Barracuda?
"Seriously???

He asked what my favorite is, not which was objectively the best.

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP16 Jun 2016 10:07 a.m. PST

Another vote for the Dauntless. Three carriers in 5 minutes at Midway. It doesn't get any better than that.

John the Greater16 Jun 2016 10:29 a.m. PST

How about the Petlyakov Pe-2 (Pawn)? The Soviets must have like it since they built so many.

I would also vote for the Helldiver being on the list.
