I'm planning a trip to France later in the year and was hoping to visit Cherbourg to see if there was anything there regarding the CSS Alabama. I've read one online review which states that the Cite de la Mare has "relics of the American Civil War naval battle" but this was written back in 2007. So my question really is: Is there anything there?

They've been diving on the wreck and have recovered a good bit of material. I'd be surprised if much of it was not in a museum.

Hi,

A very cursory search indicates that the Cité de la mer has a Blakely gun from the Alabama.
Lots of stuff as been recovered over the years, but apparently most of it was sent to the US after initial conservation work. There may be some left and on display, but I didn't find anything (didn't search much, however).
There would also be an obelisk somewhere erected by the Kearsage crew in memory of their dead, and two men from the Alabama were buried in the cemetery (2-3kms from the museum, though).

Hope this helps …

Gwen

Thank you guys for the replies. @Gwen011 Do you know the exact location for the cemetery? I have several books on the CSS Alabama and her crew so it would interest me to be able to identify them and match them to their records.
