Okay, a trivia question here! Back in the age of sail, ships "Beat to Quarters" and "Cleared for Action" to the beat of a drum when they got ready to fight. By WWII (at least in the movies) they blew a bugle or sounded a claxon or bell and announced "General Quarters" and told "all hands man your battlestations". What about WWI or even back to the Spanish American War? How did they send the men to their battlestations then? I'm primarily interested in the US Navy. Anyone know? |
