All very well, but is it a STATELY pleasure dome….it's the stateliness that makes the difference. |

And was it decreed by Kublai Khan himself? |

Thank you for the link This is not Xanadu which is about 250kms north of Beijing beyond the mountains that ring Beijing to the North and is located on the fringes of the Mongolian steppes
The site in the report is in current Beijing built on an earlier version on Beijing called Zhongdu that was burnt by Genghis Khan Later he ordered a rebuild of the city calling it first Dadu then Khanbaliq ( City of the Khan) It was the capital of the Yuan dynasty until 1358 when the Ming Dynasty took over calling it Beiping meaning Pacified North.
In 1420 the Ming established a new capital in Beijing (Northern Capital) starting the construction of the current Forbidden City. The Chinese always knew that the Khan's palace was inside the forbidden city as it was built on the "Grand Axis" which is a 8KM line that runs north from Qianmen Gate Square through the Tiananmen Gate, the Forbidden city and ending at the Drum and Bell Tower that were also Mongol built The palace was on this line
So technically the articles are incorrect as the archaeologists knew exactly here the palace was but had to wait to dig inside the forbidden city without leaving a big hole The recent innovations in technology such as ground penetrating radar allows a dig that does minimal damage |
