I'm building a homemade fleet, so I'm looking for rules that allow you to create your own ships. I'm also looking for some rules that allow me to finish a space fleet battle in an evening or long afternoon. I hate to say I want "basic" rules, because sci-fi lends itself to chrome. On the other hand, I don't want to get a physics or bookkeeping degree to play the game (i.e. As Astra's games are out of my league for complexity. Thanks in advance for the suggestions. |

Starmada Admiralty edition is fabulous and there is a downloadable shipbuilding excel sheet at Majestic 12's web page. Another excellent choice is Full Thrust, which is a free download. Starmada gives you the most flexibility to design everything yourself though. |

Full thrust, free download. Starmada Fleet Ops which is a very streamlined version of their rules suitable for fast play. Then there is also Star Navy 5150 by Two Hour games which is super simple and fast with a very good campaign system attached. I have played all 3 and each gives a very good game. Full thrust does require players to each pre plot each move which will slow the game down if there are too many ships. |

Too speed up some of the game turns in Full Thrust just use the 'squadron movement' or 'formation' method, plot and move the lead ship the others maintain formation on it ………..once in the 'melee' however………but you can still assign escort vessels to capital ships that will keep formation….. |

Full Thrust or Colonial Battlefleet are my recommendations. Full Thrust is free and lots of fun, the issue is which of the fan rewrites you choose to use as the original rules are spread across 4 rulebooks, personally I'm playing Cross Dimensions as I feel the latest offerings add a bit to much chrome. Colonial Battlefleet has more weapon options and its move to range ratio means you get a more manuver based game, but it does require a hex grid if you want to get the best out of it. Robert |

If you're looking for fleet rules instead of spaceship rules you could try ASFoS - PDF link |

I recommend using TMP search for one of several very similar discussions we've had in the past few weeks. Doug |

I keep meaning to make a thread fawning over Talon, from GMT. It's a board game, but very miniatures-friendly. Limited in ships and weapons, you just get the Federation and the Klingons knock-offs in all their SFB glory, but there are design spreadsheets online and a lot of fan creations, with official new fleets teased. It's really quick and fast, but surprisingly deep and chromed – it really does feel like they captured the feel of what they were going for. It's worth looking up a decent review and skimming the rulebook. |

Starmada hits my sweet spot, but Full Thrust is another good choice. You can't go wrong with either one. |
