Either as the whole fare or as an "accent" snack.

We do occasionally.

* Canned beans and bacon, hardtack rolls, jerky and coffee
* Potato latkes and vodka
* Bean burritos and beer

Not unless BBQ ribs can be traced to Eastern Africa.

21eRegt01 Jun 2016 2:04 p.m. PST

Only once or twice for really special occasion games.

zoneofcontrol01 Jun 2016 2:30 p.m. PST

Once put on a zombies v cannibals game. The themed foods did not go over well and I only just was released from prison a few weeks ago.

Winston Smith01 Jun 2016 3:21 p.m. PST

Crockpot chili and beer go with SO many periods.

Ragbones01 Jun 2016 3:43 p.m. PST

Nope.

foxweasel01 Jun 2016 4:23 p.m. PST

No, military food is generally c#=p nowadays, can't imagine how awful it was in times gone by.

If "period food" includes beer, then yes. Otherwise, no.

Mute Bystander01 Jun 2016 5:16 p.m. PST

No but I would serve food before or after games, not during.

Grelber01 Jun 2016 5:21 p.m. PST

Brought some sarsaparilla to a Western game once.

Once… Civil war game with beef stew, hard tack, black coffee, etc…

I had a friend back in the '90s who used to serve chili or baked beans with cornbread whenever he hosted an ACW game at his house. I once served tabouli and hummus with pita bread at one of our games featuring New Kingdom Egyptians vs. my Hittites. Hmmm…must make tabouli again, it's delicious!

Recently had chile verde, a Mexican pork stew and Mexican beer for our Cinco de Mayo game. That's the only time in 40 years.

My wife made Chicken Marengo for my gaming group for a refight of, well, Marengo. Paired nicely with a Nebbiolo…

Mike Mayes01 Jun 2016 7:37 p.m. PST

We have jelly babies with our Doctor Who game.

I am a lucky man. My wife collects historical cookbooks and loves to try out the recipes -- and of course my friends and I love to eat.

There must be some reason that I've never done this.

We have eaten pizza when fighting Republican Romans……

Did WW1 soup for a game once.

nazrat02 Jun 2016 6:34 a.m. PST

Food comes nowhere near any of my games or figures. So no.

Both "pigs" and "cows" in eastern Africa!

Does week old pizza count as "period food?"

I mean, it IS "historical"….

avidgamer02 Jun 2016 9:25 a.m. PST

Yeah… ACW. Hardtack, bacon and coffee. I did not serve the hardtack with worms.

Dave Jackson Supporting Member of TMP02 Jun 2016 12:43 p.m. PST

Did the same for Marengo…Chicken Marengo……served with a Pinot Noir

Weasel02 Jun 2016 12:44 p.m. PST

No, but we have had tea when playing the Brits in ww2, beer for germans and a shot of vodka for victorious Soviets.

platypus01au02 Jun 2016 7:56 p.m. PST

When I ran a DBM/DBMM pre-Columbian one day tournament, I always used to put on an appropriate themed BBQ. Corona beer, Black beans, tortillas, chilli and BBQ turkey.

For any game set in the far future, you can serve chocolate tempura prawns with a can of Slurm.

jowady03 Jun 2016 9:47 a.m. PST

Uhh sorry, pizza isn't period for Roman (no tomatoes until after Columbus), in fact when you read what the Romans actually ate, mice were considered a delicacy, it had very little meat if any for all but the very rich. There were lots of olives and grapes and fish for those living near the sea.

So, I think the general cases of the responses are…

- Food and games don't mix.
- Never.
- If something I cook relates to the genre, good.
- Yes. Beer.
- For easy genres with food I already make/like, yes.
- I have a special game (or two) that I do this for.
- I do it occasionally.
- I do it a lot.
- My SO is awesome and does this for me!
- Not only do I do this every time, but I also insist on period utensils, dishware, cups, and food safety.

… OK. Maybe I made the last one up. Did I miss capturing the tenor of anyone's response?

brass106 Jun 2016 7:53 a.m. PST

I've never even considered it. I did once, long ago, attend a World War II game at which the host served MREs; I had to explain that those hadn't been invented when I was in the army, let alone in 1944.

Oh, to have access to C-Rations!

They probably don't taste appreciably different 70+ years later…

You could use cigarettes as victory point markers, and trade them in for on field advantages!
