Ok, they are old figures, dating back to the '80s.
Newer figures can have loads more detail on them. That said, this is not always a benefit to the gamer. About 3-4 years ago I had a window of opportunity to paint up a couple of armies in 15mm. I'd always wanted to 'do' the period but had never got around to it. I did have a few packs of the Essex figures tucked away, enough for half a dozen units. I'd painted one unit already as British, so that was decided for them.
However, looking around I remembered the Roundway range and picked some up from Navwar. The French ended up as all Roundway. The two advantages were firstly, they were dead cheap, £1.75 GBP a pack, secondly they were very easy to paint. They also painted up very nicely. I was pleased I went with these and a medium sized army appeared quite quickly.
Two things though, firstly they standard bearers came with cast on flags, this is ok for the French in the main, but the battalion of Bavarians flags were hellish to paint! Secondly, the French cavalry come with cuirass. I filed the edge a bit and then painted over it.
If I wanted to paint a unit or two to impress The Opponent, would I use these? Possibly not, those Khurasan figures do look nice.
Would I use these again if I were to paint another couple of the armies (and finish them) for the period? Yes, I would!!
