How did the Zulu's overcome breach-loading artillery, rockets, Martini-Henry rifles and British redcoats in 1879? Find out by attending "Isandlwana: C3 in the Zulu War," Friday, 9:00-10:30 AM. Presented by Dr. Frank Kalesnik, a Historicon veteran, this talk examines "Command, Control, and Communications in a colonial campaign." Kalesnik promises a thorough study of "doctrine and leadership of both sides will be compared and assessed at the strategic, operational, and tactical levels." Isandlwana is an exceptional 19th Century African battle, not simply because the "natives" beat the European imperialists, but because their strategic vision was better, conditions perfect for their tactical system, and soldiers highly disciplined. Kalesnik, with history degrees from VMI and FSU, is a retired officer and current command historian for the United States Marine Corps. He is also a life-long wargamer who has been studying the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 for nearly forty years. |
