For the 100th anniversary of the battle of Jutland, a couple of naval buffs got together to discuss the battle and the recent books on the subject. While we talked, some 1/6000 scale ships were set out as at Windy Corner and run through a few turns of combat. link

what did you use for your battlemat? |

The mat is marine vinyl fabric from a 54 inch roll. The 2 inch spaced dots were drawn using a plastic template. |

For me, the movement trays really detract from the game appearance. |

For me the movement trays don't bother me since in most scales except for 1/1200th-1/1250th scales most Naval miniatures need bases. You need bases for a few reasons identification, ship movement. I have several scales which are: 1/6000th 1/3000th 1/2400th And in each scale all minis are based one way or the other. So for game appearance bases or movement trays don't bother me in the least. |

Nobody said you don't need bases. I have probably 500+ 1/6000 ships. You don't "need" movement trays. Bases are needed at that scale for ID and model handling. |

It's not mandatory that you have bases but it looks better when it comes to indentifying the ships with the names and Flags of the Nations. For my 1/3000th scale and 1/2400th scale all my ships are based with name of ship and Flag for the Nation. The base or movement trays are good for movement and you're not touching the ship mini too much. Now if your ships aren't based then the most you can do is place the name of the ship on the bottom of the ship but you handle the mini more than if you had the mini on a base. And most of my friends who have Naval miniatures base their ships. |

Lots of good ideas in this AAR, but I also am one who thinks that both the movement trays *and* the bases detract from the appearance. However, to each his own. Now if your ships aren't based then the most you can do is place the name of the ship on the bottom of the ship but you handle the mini more than if you had the mini on a base. I have found this isn't an issue for me, as they need to be handled each turn anyway to move them, as I paint visible differences on ships of the same class, and as I use the game as memory exercise. WRT the visible painting differences, the most common is to take paint minor details slightly differently. So for my 1/6000 QEs, there are 4 ships boats represented forward, and I paint one of them slightly differently from left to right, in the order that the ships appear in reference books (since QE herself wasn't at Jutland, I haven't painted a model for her). Again, to each his own. Mark H. |
