On Monday, May 30 (Memorial Day in the US), some of the Jackson Gamers gathered to remember the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jutland by using Avalon Hill's venerable "Battle of Jutland" rules and Jay, Lord Sterling's 1:6000 scale ships to create a "souped-up" fight between the British Grand Fleet and the German High Seas Fleet.

Please drop by link for a brief look at the battle through the eyes of Vice Admiral Hipper (Col Campbel hisself).

Well done to you and your fellow players, Colonel.

(I am intrigued as to why so many Americans want to replay this game – what is its fascination for those on the left hand side of The Pond?)

I think the appeal is it is the largest WW1 naval engagement with lots of big ships. Truly the last surface engagement of its kind where two large fleets squared off against each other. While there are several WW2 surface engagements in the Pacific none come close to this – and probably never will again.

From what I know Jutland ranks 7th of great Naval Battles of all time.

Ranking no 2 on the list is Salamis 480 BC where a combined Greek Naval Force of 371 ships met and defeated a Persian Fleet of 800 plus ships.
