Mrs Elmo just commented that she got the Host confused with the Pheasant Run.

Great in the 70's but not any more.

they are repairing it. but this is a problem of infrastucture. hopefully the renovators will fix all this by fall in.

Let's hope the ceilings don't "fall in" again! ;-) (sorry, couldn't resist!) grin

We can change the convention name from fall in to dive in.

Fix it, I say! FIX IT! Every time someone offers me a new improved better than the Host facility, it turns out not to have rooms--Timonium, Fredericksburg--not to have many rooms close--Fredericksburg--to be an outright warren--I never did find all the games at Valley Forge--or to involve commuting as part of the gaming experience--Timonium and Gettysburg--and almost always a longer drive. I won't even mention the awards Fredericksburg takes in ugly and no seating. I've already swapped out Historicon for Little Wars. I can find replacements for the others, and certainly will when they become two-day drives.

My church has a crew going to Pennsylvania to fix up old houses in June. Try to get added to the list.

We paid less per room at the Westin in Chicago, where Little Wars was just held, than the Host charged the last time I went to Cold Wars (2015). Let the Host be plowed under, I say. There are better places SOMEWHERE in the mid-Atlantic region to host a convention.

I'd like to see it fixed. Lancaster has grown on me over the years

Kelly Armstrong31 May 2016 12:34 p.m. PST

That's just "Host mold" growing on you. . .

I do not deny there is (probably) an excellent location somewhere. But look through all the alternatives we've tried, and ask yourself how the next experiment is likely to turn out. (I see I hadn't even mentioned Fredericksburg's acoustics--or the Baltimore Convention Center at all. It's a long and depressing list.)

Yogibearminis, I am, on paper, half the distance to Westin that I am to the Host. But I skipped Little Wars, and I'll be in Lancaster three times. (Cold Wars, Fall In and The Weekend.) I've driven through Chicago before, and just couldn't bring myself to do it again. No doubt you'll get me eventually, but MUST you keep Chicago like some sort of minefield between the convention and the wargamers?

Let's recap. The LHRC has good acoustics and adequate lighting. Many of us can get rooms in the Host or in buildings so close we don't have to drive for three days. There's good fast food within half a mile and a restaurant in the building. It draws about half again as many dealers as Fredericksburg, and we can all find it. Don't compare it with perfection: compare it with the other sites we've tried. Anyone care to give Timonium another go?

But it's mostly emotional. All the others are a weekend in a motel room, and I don't like motels. When I'm at the Host, I'm home.

That said, I'm sure the new owners will fix the pipes and the ceilings. It's the squeaky air check at the "G" entrance I'm worried about. That they might miss.
