Hi
Just wante d to show some of the new samurai Andrew made for his samurai range. The palanquen I think is great and quite usefull for skirmish games. Got myself a couple : ). They all come with sashimos but you will have to look at AW-miniatures mid june to enjoy that

Nice! I have a few ones from when Museum Miniatures owned the line, these look like good additions to the range.

Most of those AREN'T samurai, and the gun is absurd.

setsuko29 May 2016 9:36 p.m. PST

Sob: in what way? I've seen those guns both in depictions and in museums.

Miniaturepainter29 May 2016 10:44 p.m. PST

Sob: Well they are miniatures from feudal japan. ashigaru dressed for war, ashigaru as porters and working in the supply role. In my wargaming this some of the items I have been short of and I am happy that Aw games offer them and have taken time to produce figures which may not sell so well as spear armed samurai, archers ect.
The large calibre arguebus may look odd, but just try to google it. feudal japan had some very odd guns mounted in many strange ways. If you have Stephen turnbull " ashigaru 1467-1649" go to page 54. there it is. so absurd yes maybe but it exsisted and I need a couple to take down that warlords walls when he starts to get to independent😉

Those muskets could get huge. Here's a video of muskets at a historical festival, you can see a musket (propped up by rice bails) at around the 9:30 mark, that's roughly the size of the gun from AW.

Some nice musket reenactment overall in this video. :)

Well any good "samurai" line is going to be primarily made up of ashigaru since that's what made up the majority of a feudal Japanese army. I applaud this company for doing all of the elements of the era that other company's have neglected including porters, civilians, and yes even the "absurd" but completely accurate gun.

Well said Highland samurai. Guess thats what I tried to say.

And Nice link you posted there setsuko. Sure is some recoil in those oversize arquebuses…wow.

Actually asked Andrew if he would consider making bamboo armed peasants. Black hat make them but would be nice with some new sculpts.

Looks like the gun "issue" has been addressed already, but yeah, that's a historical thing. Bigass matchlock arquebus, not a light cannon as you'd see in Europe.

Oooh, 28mm at that!

setsuko31 May 2016 2:09 a.m. PST

Yeah, I have high hopes for this range. There was a big lack of heavier arquebuses – Perry make a European-made cannon with Japanese crew, which I also have, but the AW guns are a nice addition.

Personally, I hope they'll make some mounted officers in armour leading foot infantry, that's one thing I don't find that many miniatures for. Usually mounted samurai miniatures are all in a charging or rapidly advancing pose, that is a bad fit when you want them to lead infantry units.

When I assembled my Wargames Factory teppo armed Ashigaru I thought they had a "stilted" way of holding the gun. I put that down to the sculpting. Nice to see the firing line has the same poses as my figures. To my untrained eye it looks like this is an adaption to having little or no stock on the teppo.

Like the AW Miniatures line so far. As for the cannon, were they not knock offs of light naval cannons sold by the Portuguese?

Miniaturepainter06 Jun 2016 11:25 a.m. PST

About the mounted samurai….I am about to paint someof the other mounted samurai for this range. They are armed with swords…katanas. The aw horses are not charging but could be used together with infantry or just standing. A horse is selvdom 100 percent relaxed with a rider on top and all sorts of things happening around them and the rider strugling to keep them still. Finished standing samurai and will post them in a day or two.

Cheers Rasmus

Bowman: initially they used a lot of imported naval cannon, but they quickly developed their own gun. The AW ones are more "big handguns", which was a natural evolution of increasing the size of the arquebuses to provide heavier support and light artillery for siegework.
