"Seventy-five years today, the Royal Navy sank the German battleship Bismark in a three-day running battle in which the Bismark sunk the British battle cruiser HMS Hood. Ultimately, the German battleship was disabled when her rudder was damaged in a torpedo attack by obsolescent Fairey Swordfish biplane torpedo bombers from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal. Here is a British newsreel of the events…." See more here link Amicalement Armand |

Excellent find Armand! Stunned by how close the Bismarck seems to be in the combat footage. My dad had a friend who was there and he said the end reminded him of a Hollywood western with ships circling like Apaches round a stagecoach. Thanks for posting my friend. |

Will take a look when time permits. The ship, though crippled, was difficult to sink. They sent in a bunch of DDs to finish her off with torpedoes, IIRC. |

Torpedoes from the cruiser Dorsetshire and the battleship Rodney (the only successful torpedo attack carried out by a battleship) |

Hmmmmm, didn't know the Rodney even carried torpedoes. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. |

Some interesting footage though that of Ark Royal launching Swordfish may have been stock film taken at another time (from the film "Ships With Wings"?). When the first strike was launched the ship was steaming into a gale and the rise and fall of the flightdeck was measured as more than 50 ft. Stunned by how close the Bismarck seems to be in the combat footage. I believe that Rodney closed to less than 2 miles during latter stages of the action. Has her claimed torpedo hit been verified? I know there was speculation about it was a hit or not. |

Happy you enjoyed it my friends!. (smile) The real heroes were the Sworfish pilots which damaged the battleship and allow the British Fleet to chace it… Amicalement Armand |
