Last weekend I had the opportunity to play Dragon Rampant. I was already huge fan and promoter of Dan Mersey's previous game Lion Rampant. However, Dragon Rampant has rekindled the fire for me to want to play fantasy miniatures games again.

I had tried Kings of War as an alternative to Warhammer and I felt is was just a rehash of the same mechanics along with the same min-max problems. Dragon Rampant recalls the old days of the original Chain Mail and other early fantasy war games without the complexity and as always the rules are crisp, well written, humorous and fun. It is good to be pulling out my old fantasy figures and looking at them anew to determine how I could configure them into interesting and entertaining war-bands. The group I am playing with is even discussing a campaign using Dragon Rampant.

I also think that some historical war gamers that felt that Lion Rampant did not have enough chrome will find that Dragon Rampant adds enough bits and bobs that would easily convert to historical Medieval games. I know I am already thinking in that direction. Last item how often do you see a well printed and professionally produced set of rules that only costs $15 USD?

I like Lion Rampant a lot.

I have Dragon Rampant but have not played it yet. I expect it to be good too.

Basically Mick if you have played Lion Rampant you understand and know the game mechanics for Dragon Rampant. The game I played recently I used some of my old Chaos Warriors and adapted them to equivalent Lion Rampant units. The other two players who owned the Dragon Rampant rules had set up their forces using the units out of that rule system. The game played just fine even though I did not know the rules for magic and other "fantastic" elements. In fact I more or less won the scenario despite not have all those other options. That tells me the system is not broken and all three of us had a great time with lots of laughs and since we were playing 36 points each it was a big game with lots of old school fantasy figures on the table.

Our gaming group is having a lot of fun with Dragon Rampant. Some of my GW Fantasy armies that haven't been out of the cabinet for years have found themselves on the table top once again.

There is an article with a Dragon Rampant Campaign in Wargames Illustrated #339 if you are interested.

Good to know m4. I will look it up. We might actually adapt the old campaign rules from Warhammer Ancients but I will want to look at the Wargames Ill issue.

Yes all of my group are tickled pink to have an excuse to pull out all our old GW fantasy figures as well as being able to use just about any range of fantasy figures.

Played my first game of Dragon Rampant last week and enjoyed it :) Had played quite a few Lion Rampant games before it.

The campaign is a low fantasy, Arthurian themed one. You might be able to adapt it to your needs.

I use it for games in the GoT setting works quite fine for that
