Dear List

Here's a challenge we recently had on Society of Daisy.

A friend comes to you, who he knows to be versed in the history of a period and asks you to recommend three books on the general history of the period, NOT SOLELY THE MLITARY DIMENSION. He is talking about the whole cultural and historical panorama. Your task is to recommend three books to him that will give him a good general grounding in the period. The periods are shown below, you can chose one period, or more than one or all of them. REMEMBER, it is something to give him a good grasp of the whole period and not something highly specialized, like war. You can use a two volume set for an entry, but not a multiple series like "The Cambridge History of the Modern World" or Will and Ariel Durant.

1. The Ancient World.
2. The Mediaeval Age
3. The Renaissance.
4. The Seventeenth Century
5. The Eighteenth Century
6. The Nineteenth Century
7. The Twentieth Century.

Remember you have to cover MOST of the period and get as much in as you can, AND one of them should be a source source written in the period, Except of course for the twentithe century as we all are moderns and have been reared on the literature and culture of the period. Yes, I have emphasized primarily here Western History. To do elsewise would make the contest impossible.

Hello people!

I wanted to share an idea, well more than JUST an idea, that is in test/protype process. As the title says, it is about playing wargames with few miniatures, fantasy (could be modern/sci fi) skirmish games but in the floor/garden/yard/park.. in any "outside, with fresh air" place, however of course could be a garage, some big room, an edification with no use (like abandoned house or whatever) using the objects of common life as scenery: like bricks to make walls, real bush, foliage, small plants, or even a dog house!

ANd with that: "big miniatures/models" , "wargaming gnomes" ..

What caused me have this idea, was looking normal garden gnomes in daily life, watching not only humanoid, but also creatures (like rabits, deer, chicken , etc) plus the idea of wargaming outside a room, and beyond the table really inspired me.

First thing i did was google! i only could find some -in the rol of a SET of models, "angry gnomes" whose are made in the gnomy style, with modern weapons:[/size]

Apart from that, i found one or another gnome with a "combative design", but not sets nor nothing.

So, i decided i could try printing the 3D models i am sculpting to make normal fantasy miniatures (in 1/72 scale, and 28mm ) in 1/7 scale, which is 25mm tall models. So i choose the first one, a modular (2 weapons, 2 heads, and separated shield) "miniature" so with only this prototype i can make several combinations.. once i send it to mould and make firsts "production prototypes".

The 3D model is this:

With who there are various assembling options:

And the print is this:

Here is a picture with the "viking" hidding behind a tree, or next to a box as cover:

I would like to hear your thoughts about this, they could serve 2 purposes: guarding/ornamenting the garden, and when required, beign summoned to battle! :D

There was a game that was popular in the early 2000s called Fairy Meat that had Garden Gnomes in it.

The idea was that they were fairies running around and because all of the magic has pretty much gone out of the world they had to eat each other, as the only magical things left, to stay alive.

The best part was that you didn't need any terrain. Your house was terrain or your garden. There were clockwork gnomes also that had submachine guns.

I haven't seen it around in a while but if someone starts producing it a gain I'll probably buy some figures for it just because it is fun and easy to play anywhere.
