To narrow things down a little I'm looking for opinions on what manufacturers you guys would go with. The restrictions are that I want 1/300 or 1/285 scale. A single manufacturer or manufacturers whose ranges can sit side by side without one looking out of scale, and a good range of Western Front aircraft. Oh and available in the UK would help.

So what do the the assembled brains of TMP recommend? Extra marks for giving your reasons with a bonus for nice eye candy!

It was Heroics and Ros for me. They have a great selection and you canīt beat the prices. Oh, they are 1/300.

No eye candy, sorry!

The BEST 1/285 are, without a doubt C-in-C.

Incredible detail. A bit fiddily tho. But real beauties.
The only photos I have are here: link
The little bitty Voss tripe of course!

Several of the Shapeways aircraft designers do WW 1 aircraft in 1/285 to 1/300 scale-Kampffleiger, Reduced Aircraft Factory and Decapod for three. The Shapeways aircraft have the advantage that they don't need assembly. Here's an example:

Also, in the event that some of the aircraft you want can't be found in the same scale (say most of what you want is 1/300 with a few in 1/285 or 1/288), some of the designers will rescale upon request.

Anyway, if it were my project I'd prowl around Shapeways and see if I could get all I wanted there.

I prefer H&R as they have the widest range of aircraft that I've found.

Isn't H&R closed for recovery from surgery?

H&R are what I went with. A great compromise between detail and durability for gaming. Also a very large selection.

H&R are my main forces too, with filler from Shapeways, Irregular, CinC, Skytrex, and Goblintooth. Doing it again, I'd stick to H&R and Shapeways. Struts are the only fiddly thing about H&R.

CinC is really nice but super fragile and fiddly.

Thanks for the recommendations. H&R and Shapeways will probably get my custom in the near future.

The struts are quite fiddly,so I always replace them with very thin wire.

My H&R order has arrived and I'm very impressed. Some mold lines to file and a little flash to remove but nothing major. I need to invest in a tiny drill to make the holes for the struts a little larger but that's about all. I have a pair each of Eindeckers, Nieuport 17s, Spad 13s, Sopwith 1 1/2 strutters, Dv and DII Albies and DH2s and one each of the rest of the main types used on the Western Front.
