Especially looking for 'uniforms' of the several princely armies that apparently made up a sizeable portion of the mutineers. From the little I've been able to find they sound quite colourful and would look great on a gaming table. Imagine a group of cavalry with all the horse's manes painted bright orange or light blue! Are there any books that deal with these? Or on-line references? Thanks very much for any help! |

Try googleing 'Moghul images' and you should find some of soldiers. |

The Foundry book on the British in India 1825 to 1859 by John French is IMO, a must have if you're interested in the Mutiny. But, unfortunately, there is very little solid info on the Oude Irregular Force, the Gwalior Contingent, the Kotah Contingent, the Mulwa and Bhopal Contingents in the book. I took this as an excuse to make up my own uniforms. After all, who's to say you're wrong? My own "Princely Contingent" is composed of Foundry native matchlock men wearing white turbans, bright red coats, green sashes and white loose trousers. My thinking was that the princes would try to "ape" the Company and Queens appearance. Anyhow, it works for me. |

Hi Nick, Yes I do have the John French book and it is indeed very very good. Still, I had no idea that there were so many princely states! Perhaps Col. Snook can be enticed to publish a really good reference book? |

WillieB, in my opinion, Col. Snook is the best popular military historian around today. I believe I own all of his books. And it's great that he has embraced the wargame community. His notes on the Mutiny are excellent and hopefully he'll get around to the Princely contingents eventually. After reading his notes on the 78th Highlanders, I realize that mine are painted all wrong for the relief of Lucknow (sigh). |

I was just up on the Iron Duke site and noted that Col. Snook says that the Gwalior contingent and the Oudh Irregular Forces were dressed like the Bengal Native Infantry and led by British officers before the mutiny. In the workbench section he also shows the "local" contingents wearing the peakless shako worn in the 1840's. |
