I have seen it mentioned on several Yahoo groups and on the Warlord Games site that effective in 2017, the EU is banning the sale of hobby items and kits made from metal, resin and hard plastic. This is in response to the number of injuries suffered by hobbyists working with these materials. It appears that it will apply to any hobby item including miniature figures.

Do any of our European readers have further clarification of this?

This was highlighted on the Colonial Wars Yahoo group of which I am a member as an April Fool's prank by Warlord Games.

link Notice the date of the posting and the large lettered HAPPY APRIL FOOLS DAY EVERYONE! at the end of the article. Looks like it did fool some people.

Martin,

That is why I asked for clarification from those directly involved. Unfortunately, given the mandates from the EU in the past it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility.

@ Jim

Ouch! Suckered by an April Fools prank, that hurts. Thank you for clearing it up.

This sounds too mad to believe without some sources. Sounds like a joke or if not something that falls foul of the no politics rule.
I've not heard of A&E departments being clogged with modellers with kits driven into their skulls.

Edit; I need to type faster.

Whenever you see a story about EU regulations that makes you sigh and mutter "you couldn't make it up", a good rule of thumb is that somebody probably just did….

As someone who works in MDF, is there a petition I can sign to get that rule implemented?

Name the author and story:

Good point Dave…they might just try it one day!

Remember why miniatures are no longer made of lead. (I mean, aside from the fact that the noses wore off about the third time you picked them up) For those too young to remember, it had to do with New York state.

I did once have to attend A&E after stabbing myself in the leg with my modelling scalpel. Whilst painting I noticed something roll off my work desk with my peripheral vision. I instinctively brought my legs together to prevent said object falling on the floor and discovered that it was my scalpel, which had fallen into my lap flat, and that I had driven it into one leg with the other as I brought them together.

DHautpol,
Ouch!!!!

D'Hautpol,

Not just me then… :(

I knew someone who did it with a ludicrously dangerous double-ended scalpel…

Professionals use gloves when handling paper stacks; I have had some very nasty paper cuts. The EU, like the HSE, are easy targets but actually do some valuable work; a bit like politicians and estate agents.
