I'm watching this for the first time. Great movie, Sam is a fantastic director. But how good is the equipment (uniforms ect.) My knowledge od german and Russian gear is limited. |

The old German film? I'm not a uniform-nerd, but everything looked decent to me. |

Yes, the uniforms are pretty good. Not every German soldier had quite as many decorations and other bling as Steiner though:) Steiner actually wears a reversible splinter parka for some of the film, but it is so filthy you cant see the camo pattern. |

No the Sam Peckinpah movie. |

SPOILER ALERT(don't let it bother you, please…) – The Russians are wearing Italian helmets. For some unknown reason they could not get enough Russian helmets, although they didn't change for about 30 or so years, from about 1940 till mid 60's. Weird… Peter |

Cross of Iron is a great movie. All of the equipment was close enough to not distract from it. |

The sequel starring Richard Burton as Steiner (Breakthrough) was OK as a standalone war movie but nothing on the original – even with a pretty stellar cast. |

Sam P's film is by far the better of the two Cross of Iron movies. One of my all time favorites. The Richard Burton film is really bad in comparison. It does have several great one liners in the movie. Opening sequence when the Germans are blowing up the Railroad station. The young soldier turns and empties a full clip of MP40 ammo into the Latrine, turns and salutes the Officer who asks him what he is doing. Snaps heels and proclaims "Denying the enemy the facilities of the station, Sir!". Yes one of many throughout the film. |

One of my favorite war movies, the factory scene is great. Mike Bunkermeister Creek Bunker Talk blog |

Great movie, especially loved how they handled the class distinction of the East Prussian aristocrat captain and the poor landsers |

I think the film version of Cross of Iron is great, even though Pekinpah ran out of money partway. If you read the novel by Willie Heinrich, the story is very different, but still great. |

Saw it in the theater. The VHS tape version I saw later had terrible sound. Didn't notice about the helmets at the time. That is odd. Even I have a couple of M41s! Admittedly, I picked them up in the early 90s,when you could get anything(T34s for $10,000 USD!),but still… I'd like to see a movie of Heinrich's other book, "Crack of Doom". |

I enjoyed it immensely the one time I saw it…it goes great with whiskey! |

I always wanted a jacket like the one Steiner wore, I just liked the look & color contrast of it, along with the way it draped on him. I have something like it in a faded blue and gray Club 77 shirt of all things that is not unlike a late 19th Century British patrol jacket that I practically live in during the cool months here in Florida as a light jacket. Any ideas where I could get a light green & white jacket like Steiner's? |

Finances for the film came from a West German porn producer |

"Any ideas where I could get a light green & white jacket like Steiner's?" It is a padded reversible winter parka in splinter and white (except in the film it is so filthy you can't easily make out the splinter pattern). Repros of such items abound: link they are pretty warm though:) Roll it in mud (a lot) to get it the same colour as Steiners. |

Finances for the film came from a West German porn producer. Well that explains the dodgy scenes with the Russian army women! |
