"If and when the apocalypse ever comes, it won't be the meek who inherit the Earth. It will be whoever can afford one of these bullet-proof beasts: Introducing the Ghurka RPV Civilian Edition, a street-legal, 13,500-pound off-road vehicle designed to roll through war zones like a rhinoceros in a petting zoo. Built by Terradyne, a Canadian manufacturer of armored personnel carriers and light tactical vehicles, the Ghurka RPV can ram through chained gates and drive in water up to 30-inches deep. It can also withstand 7mm armor-piercing rounds. And it's packing heat: the 6.7 liter V8 turbodiesel delivers 300hp and 660 Ib.-ft. of torque, as well as a top speed of 70mph. The only catch? It costs $278,000. USD But, hey, you can't put a price on indestructibility…"

I hope that is a typo in the vehicle description – only proof against 7mm AP? So a 7.62 AP would go right on through? 12.7mm would be something worth while, but a vehicle that can be ventilated by a WW1 8mm Mauser?

That article has three different spellings for "Gurkha".

Looking around a bit, the 7.61/7.62 rounded down and with velocity as a factor might be just the glass stopping one hit. And the rest of it may show it to be a glorified SUV with armor way lighter than steel. (No 70 mph with 3/4" steel.)

But still more survivable than a Smart Car when shrapnel's flying.

(I'm not a writer of MilSpecs and didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.)

Keep in mind that AP isn't the traditional load-out for even military small arms. They tend to pass through soft targets without doing as much damage as standard full metal jacketed rounds. If you were expecting to meet a Gurkha you'd probably switch to AP but otherwise it might be a surprise.

Well, at least it has lots of handholds for when you need to push it after you run out of gas… ;-)

Not impressed, not for that price. It's puny, for one thing. You need a large vehicle, and a lot more than 330 HP. That isn't "armor", it's thick skin….

Supercilius Maximus19 May 2016 3:55 p.m. PST

Real Gurkhas are much better value.

And harder to stop.

You are right… I'm know what I'm talking about!… (smile)
