I'm painting 13th centuary Tuetonic Knights, Hanseatic. Danish & Swedish knights for the Northern Crusades. When I look at pictures, old and new, they rarely seem to be using lance pennons. When did lance pennons become common? Were they used in battle? |

Lance pennons for ordinary soldiers appear in early manuscripts e.g.: Sleeping guards in the Chludov Psalter, 9th century Byzantine 'Betrayal of the army of the righteous' in Prudentius' Psychomachia, BnF Ms. Latin 8318, France, 9th century For the 13th century - the Karlsschrein, Aachen Cathedral, Germany c.1215; has a few lance pennons, which may be for leaders. Chronica Majora by Matthew Paris, England, c.1240–5 and the Morgan / Maciejowski Bible, France, mid 13th Century have only a few small rectangular banners. Triangular lance pennons appear in the Navarre Picture Bible, Pamplona, Spain, 1197AD and are very common in the Las Cantigas de Santa Maria of Alfonso X, Spain, c1284 Druzhina 13th Century Illustrations of Costume & Soldiers |
