I am a little confused about this. Does artillery always require its own leader, or can it attach to an infantry formation and get activated with that formation? |

Bill, Unless you choose to impose restrictions on who commands what unit, any Leader in a Force can command any unit so long as he is of a higher status level than any other Leader attached to the unit. So any of your Leaders could activate the artillery if it is within their command range. However, it may be advisable to pay for a Leader for the gun to help manage shock at least. Only Groups of the same type may join a Formation so you can't attach a gun to an infantry unit and consider it to be activated when the infantry formation is activated. It would need a separate Command Initiative spent on it. John |

Would probably be better to give it it's own leader. A Level 1 leader is only 3 points. You could however use some other nearby leader to activate the unit, but it should be a leader who would normally have some reason to be responsible for the gun. Think Morgan at Cowpens or Greene at Guilford Courthouse. Any old Militia or small unit leader would not have a reason to take responsibility for an artillery piece as they would be too busy managing their on troops. Cowpens is a good example of a small unit action. Tarleton the British Force commander did not get involved with the handling of the artillery, not did any other British leader. They operated on their own the whole battle, so their own leader is probably the best way to go. |
