Today I want to show you pictures from my visit in Lorraine. This first report will focus on monuments around the villages of Mars-la-Tour, Vionville and Rezonville. The text is in german and in english. Have fun. link |

A great post, thanks for putting it up. I have been fortunate enough to go round these sites a number of times, and there has been an unfortunate development in the last couple of years – theft. The French monument at Mars La Tour is a case in point. The bronze panels which were on all four sides, were scenes from the battle in semi relief, and they were all stolen, as was the Hessian Lion monument just outside Amonvillers beside the old railway. I suppose it is possibly an unintended consequence of the publication of a guide to all the monuments of the area, complete with photographs and maps, which came out at about the same time as the new museum was opened. Either way, it is a very unwelcome development. Mollinary |

I've thought about hitting the FPW battlefields next time I'm in Europe. Can you get a reasonable feel for the action like you can at Waterloo, Gettysburg etc? |
Mollinary | 15 May 2016 7:14 a.m. PST |
Yes, with a good map and a decent knowledge of the actions. These are not public parks, but at Gravelotte St Privat and Vionville-Mars la Tour there are cycle paths with a number of noticeboards describing the battlefield. The museum in Gravelotte is also brand new, and if you can get there when it is open it is magnificent. And these two battlefields are covered in monuments, mostly German, as the area was annexed to Germany between 1871-1918 and again 1940-44. Firms such as The Cultural Experience also do battlefield tours. Mollinary |

Thanks all of you. Hi Mollinary, thanks for your Information. I'm shocked about your Information. Theft? Incredible. And Lascaris YES you can get the feeling. Take the Gravelotte Osprey with you. In the next two or three weeks you can read my report of the museum visit. |

Incredible, but true! I enquired at the museum, thinking they may have been taken away for restoration. Sadly, they confirmed that they had been stolen. Mollinary |

Disgusting but sadly not confined to France, as Mollinary will confirm theft of metal from the monuments to 1866 is occurring with regularity. The locals have their own ideas as to who is responsible. |

Yes, a number of the monuments in the Czech Republic have lost their metal components. However, they have managed to replace some with painted resin/fibre glass replicas, which are quite convincing. Mollinary |

We have something rather spiffy planned for the Church of the Transfiguration in Chlum, all will be revealed in due course. |

I was in the church in Chlum last week and it is completely filled with scaffolding and there was a bloke with a big pot of Farrowic and Ballowic, so lets hope he knows he has to finish the job by the end of June |

Good to see you're going to Mass again John, more rejoicing in heaven etc. There's every chance we won't be ready in time either so it doesn't really matter, would be nice all the same. Farrowic and Ballowic ? |
Mollinary | 27 May 2016 1:16 p.m. PST |
Farrow and Ball, paint suppliers to the gentry? Perhaps their Bohemian cousins? |

Ah, never progressed beyond Dulux and Crown myself, see you on the 2nd. |
