Hi all,

We're contemplating getting back into Pirates but one of the things that turned us off in our previous Legends of the High Seas gaming were the ship battle rules. We'd like something more detailed, much more detailed is fine, that allows 28mm brig/cutter sized vessels with individual crews to battle it out. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Regards,
Tom

Try Wooden Ships and Iron Men (old AH game)

WS&IM is a great set of sailing rules but you would need to tack on a more detailed set boarding action rules for individual crews to battle it out as mentioned. Perhaps the melee rules from LoHS melding with WS&IM would be two good tastes that taste great together evil grin

Boarders Away! Free from War Artisan.

What about Sea Eagles? Though the rules focus on the War of 1812 they could probably be used for any period and they are pretty detailed.

And a Bottle of Rum covers that and fleet action as well. Here's a Bat Rep.

The new Osprey rule set "On the Seven Seas" seems built for what you want, although I have not personally tried them.

'Broadsides and Boarding Parties' are similar to 'Pirates' above. IIRC a link in the Boardgame geek entry for this game will take you to a free set of the rules.

On the Seven Seas isn't very good.
If you want detailed Age of Sail rules for ship on ship actions, Post Captain certainly fits the bill.

If I may insert a shameless plug…
The game I've been developing, Blood and Plunder, arose out of just such a need :)

It's on Kickstarter right now with just a few hours left!

EDIT: Here's a link to a quick overview of ship combat:

Much as I like "Away Borders" from War Artisan they really are designed for small ship actions using ships of under 20 guns.

War Artisan's "Captains Bold" is designed as single ship frigate action. They are elegant, great fun, require only limited space to play.

Try "As Per Margin" -- uses simple charts for single ships, not as detailed as WS&IM or Close Action, and more for commanding a squadron. This was in Monk's Corner, originally in an old MWAN issue, but Russ Lockwood polished up Brother Aelred's graphics, incorporated the errata into the rules, and put into booklet form. Age of Sail (primarily for 7YW and Napoleonic eras), $19 USD, in stock (item 201111) here at OMM. Also available in UK from Caliver.

From the description:

Clever 'falling aboard' movement brings ships close enough to grapple and board -- and maybe even collide.

Easily learned and quickly played, As Per Margin reflects a philosophy of offering enough flavor for a great game, but avoiding too much realism that would bog down the game.

Optional rules include Red Hot Shot, Shore Batteries, Debris Fields, Elite Crews, and more.

* Graphical Ship Charts
* 1st Through 6th Rate Ships
* Merchant Ships
* NO Order Writing!
* Uses d6 dice
* Quick Reference Sheet with all tables
* Includes Scenario: Second Battle of Finisterre October 14, 1747
