And what is the simplest set of rules that you play regularly (and enjoy)?

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut13 May 2016 11:06 p.m. PST

Frostgrave. It is the *only* game I play regularly. I would also say FiveCore and DBA, both of which I *want* to play regularly but it hasn't happened yet.

How regular? Played lots of tactical battles using the T.W.E.R.P.S. rules. Doesn't get much simpler then that. Been a few months though since the last time really got into it.

Ney Ney13 May 2016 11:37 p.m. PST

The Rampants. Dragon and Lion.

Pictors Studio13 May 2016 11:59 p.m. PST

Warmaster is pretty simple. Great and simple.

MHoxie14 May 2016 2:17 a.m. PST

DBA is the simplest, once you've parsed the Barkerese.

Martin Rapier14 May 2016 2:42 a.m. PST

The various command and colours games.

Various Neil Thomas rules.

I rarely play anything where you can't fit the reference sheet onto a piece of A4 paper.

Crossfire is the simplest game I play but also probably the most subtle. Not playing it just at the moment because of previous over-exposure!

Lately A Gentlemans War and Flint and Feather. Though neither are yet published. Simple fun and addicting.

CrossFire and Cross of Iron.

Dynaman878914 May 2016 4:40 a.m. PST

Simplest game I played is Victory in the Pacific from Avalon Hill. The simplest game I play regularly is Command and Colors.

Miniatures wise I go for games in roughly the same complexity scale, Chain of Command, IABSM, Fireball Forward, FFT3, etc.

"One Hour Wargames" by Neil Thomas. A collection of 2-3 page rules for 9 different historical periods, with 30 scenarios that can be played with any of them.

Simple as in?

I think Chris Kemp's NQM is probably the actual simplest ..

DBA probably the shortest but if you take DBA as 12 units, Neil Thomas's AMW has only 8.

Gladiolus by The Society of Ancients probably wins, though …

Kings of war. Infinitely simpler than warhammer.

Songs of blades and heroes for skirmish level.

steamingdave4714 May 2016 10:37 a.m. PST

Twilight Of the Sunking for late 17th/ early 18th century- 2 sides of A4, no calculation of fire/ melee. Simple morale test, looking at situation of unit, determines what the unit does. Great set of rules, picked up by most players within 2 moves.

vtsaogames14 May 2016 11:10 a.m. PST

One Hour Wargames.

The simplest ruleset/game I keep going back to, and enjoying, is probably "One World" by Metagaming. I think it was written by somebody who hands around here somewhere.

The counters that came with the original microgame were pretty much worthless as the various clouds, rocks and towers were nearly impossible to tell from each other. Nice art, just printed in such a way that you couldn't tell which one was which on the game map.

I made a set of replacement counters (available in the graphics section of the One World entry on BoardGameGeek). Just having usable counters turns it into a fun, amusing game (for me anyway) that works well solo (again, for me anyway).

Ragbones14 May 2016 4:15 p.m. PST

'Blood and Sand,' by Tim Wright, for miniatures and 'Ancients,' for boardgaming.

Howler14 May 2016 9:24 p.m. PST

Toss up between x-wing or lotr. Can throw pig wars in too.

Weasel15 May 2016 7:21 a.m. PST

1 hour wargames. Hard pressed to think of anything simpler that was still a good game.
