I have that! Have yet to play it, but…I have it. I come from a heavy, HEAVY RPG background, see…?

it is still a great game, and I happen to like the buckets o' dice approach… It gave me a reason to buy a "Pound-O-Dice" several years back. I also enjoy rolling one die for each figure attacking, or defending against Hits.

The rules cover all types of fantasy fighting: magic, of course; siege war, with all the necessary tools; many different troop types; undead; aerial combat, and units; and one of my personal favorites, Battle Platforms/Machines, such as chariots, and other things you might dream up. The rules have pretty good conversion rules for fantasy games, so it is highly adaptable.

One of its downfalls is that it is completely open-ended. There are no pre-made army lists; no rulebooks for any particular army; no boxed sets of armies to purchase. For this game, you do all of that yourself. Personally, I love it, but other folks want all of that work done for them; they want to buy a pre-made army which they just need to glue together, paint, and game with.

If you are willing to put together your own armies, your own storylines, this is the game for you.

In addition to the game rules, the book also contains guidance on how to make terrain, and how to paint miniatures. The techniques are older, but they are still valid, yielding decent results. If you want a hard copy, search e-Bay, as they pop up occasionally. For me, it is a great game, which I've been playing since around 1995, and I still enjoy it, today. Cheers!

I echo the Sarge's comments. Putting together an army can be really fun and I enjoy the bucket 'o dice games. Well worth it for someone willing to invest a little brain power.

Still one of my favorite fantasy miniature games.

We played 1st edition a bunch, including some memorable "build your own!" battles with XP point values as suggested in the back of the rules. My friends managed to create sone insane, mostly invisible, armies of obscure creatures from the Fiend Folio, illusionary battalions of Iron Golems, etc.

Great fun. :)

The only thing that was tricksy to me was the open order/closed order aspect, mostly because moving and aligning units in open order spacing was a pain.
